ExChristian.Net -- encouraging ex-Christians

encouraging de-converting and former Christians
The ExChristian.Net blog exists for the express purpose of encouraging those who have decided to leave religion behind. It is not an open challenge for Christians to avenge what they perceive as an offense against their religious beliefs.

Sexta/Viernes/Friday-POSER-Deus - Dios - GodImage by Caio Basilio via Flickr

I explain my life as a born-again Christian, my deconversion, and my life as an atheist. In the deconversion section, I will show how evidence, reason, and experiences related to prayer, morality, deconverted Christians, the Bible, and my relationship with God Himself all lead to my eventual inability to believe anymore.

The author of this series of videos (Evid3nc3) is a PhD candidate in Intelligent Systems (a sub-discipline of Computer Science); his focus is on evidence-justified beliefs and their argumentation as a means of conflict resolution both in computational and human systems.

This 11-part video series simply continues to get better and better with each new section. Take the time to view the entire series. You'll be glad you did -- webmdave

"For many are invited, but few are chosen." Matthew 22:14 (NIV)

Can we really be blamed? The Bible is full of passages that describe how God favors some people over others and decides in advance who will be allowed into the kingdom of Heaven. Since, the only alternative to spending eternity in Heaven in the Bible is spending eternity in Hell, it can be assumed that God also predestined people to burn in hell, by not selecting them for Heaven.

We always hear about the many amazing things that Jesus of Nazareth apparently did, but nobody ever asks about the things that Jesus supposedly COULD have done, being omnipotent, but either didn't bother to do or didn't think were all that important. Recently I had a discussion with my Evangelical father-in-law, which went surprisingly well (for a religious debate). It started with an argument between my mother-in-law and my wife and then somehow the conversation got hijacked by us (the men). I know I have to work on that one, seriously. I got involved when my mother-in-law accused my wife of being closed minded for not accepting her beliefs in Creation. Her exact words were, “I wish you could just be more open-minded!” My father-in-laws take wasn’t that we are “closed-minded”, but rather we are “less open-minded” than they are. I obviously disagreed. Here is a summary of some of the points I covered in this conversation. I will be leaving out a lot of the conversation out and focus on a few of the points that I was pleasantly surprised to have been able to make.

If there were any doubts about writer and general provocateur Christopher Hitchens ability to pull a crowd, they were entirely dispelled by the sold-out opening night of the first ever Festival of Dangerous Ideas. Presented by the Sydney Opera House and the St James Ethics Centre, the Festival brought together some of the more controversial thinkers from Australia and around the world. Hitchens's keynote address, followed by a discussion with our own Tony Jones, was an expansion on his bestselling, "God is Not Great: Religion Poisons Everything". Hitchens was at his polemical best, delivering a beautifully constructed speech supporting his argument that religion is not only completely implausible, but often actively destructive.

Why won't God heal amputees?

I observed that theists who try to respond to the question, tend to end up actually avoiding the question in their response and answering an unasked question. Could it be that they have no good answer for why their god refuses to heal amputees every single time, so they try to explain why they're god allows bad things to happen instead and hope we don't notice? I discuss it a little in this video and the reason why I think the question is important.

Last week was the 9th anniversary of my grandmother's passing. She died on my mother's birthday.

I decided to visit her grave site for the first time since the funeral 9 years ago. I needed to have some alone time to remember her. The circumstances surrounding her death were rather terrible, but I needed to revisit them. I needed to say a final farewell and set her to rest in my own mind. Aware she could not hear me, I still shared a few personal words with her. I felt I owed myself the therapy.

I loved her very much. Sometimes I get emotional, when I see her strong features in my children's faces. I see her in my father and his sisters and when I look in the mirror and a sadness comes over me, because I miss her.

Abraham Sacrificing Isaac by Laurent de La Hir...Image via Wikipedia

This is the first in a series of videos I plan on doing addressing some of the violent, absurd and atrocious Bible stories being taught to children in Sunday School around the world today.

This one deals with the story of Abraham and Isaac. In the Bible, God wanted to test Abraham's faith by commanding him to murder his son as a sacrifice. Abraham was completely willing and plotted to kill his son, right up to the very moment that God stopped him, as he passed the test by showing his willingness to kill his own son. Children are taught that this is the type of faith they should have and that they should put God before everything, including their own children, even if it means killing them at God's request.

From Wikipedia:

The creation–evolution controversy (also termed the creation vs. evolution debate or the origins debate) is a recurring theological and cultural-political dispute about the origins of the Earth, humanity, life, and the universe,[1] between the proponents of evolution, backed by scientific consensus, and those who espouse the validity and/or superiority of literal interpretations of a creation myth. The dispute particularly involves the field of evolutionary biology, but also the fields of geology, palaeontology, thermodynamics, nuclear physics and cosmology.[2]

This debate is most prevalent in the United States, but also exists in Europe and elsewhere.[3] It is often portrayed as part of the culture wars.[4] While the controversy has a long history,[5] today it is mainly over what constitutes good science,[6] with the politics of creationism primarily focusing on the teaching of creation and evolution in public education.[7]
