Please someone, lend me an ear

And I’ll tell you what I hear.

It seems that we get misunderstood because many people are formulating what they’re going to say before they even hear what’s being said, or just out-right denying it. It’s like “peas porridge micro-waved won’t grow mold.” I believe that we got some minds under erasure, to borrow from the postmodern folks that aren’t so post anymore. I like Truth with a capital T, but it can’t be found in the books. But no one listens to me. I’ll try and explain…

I say (Me): I was a believer washed in the blood of the Lamb for 33 years and for 12 of them I was devout, with what I felt was a uniquely spiritual/intellectual foundation: solid baby…impermeable.

Christian response (C-dude): No you weren’t.

Me: In college, I got baptized in a lake and then got baptized in the Spirit. I prayed in tongues. Why once, I jumped up in church, spoke as the spirit led – and 10 people ran to the altar under conviction.

C-dude: No you didn’t.

Me: I backslid a lot…

C-dude: Hmmm…

Me: … but was restored to fellowship with God.

C-dude: No you weren’t.

Me: I prayed a lot, using Scripture, petitions, intercessions and the Holy Spirit to intercede with His signature, sub-level moaning (see the epistle to the Romans).

C-dude: No you didn’t.

Me: I eventually left the Charismania roller coaster for a simpler lazy atheism.

C-dude: No you didn’t.

Me: In 1995, I had an existential crisis. I came back to the faith, embracing the rock-solid Reformed doctrine once and for all delivered to the saints. I traded dispensationalism for the intellectually stimulating partial-preterist, post-mil position (heck, my friend, we can at least prove that Nero existed and did something bad). In short, I pleaded predestination, so I could get justification (through grace by faith alone) to in turn kick-start my sanctification leading to my ultimate glorification.

C-dude: No you didn’t.

Me: As a grad student I actually challenged my Dept. Head when he said the Bible was myth. Many fellow students felt I won. Hey, I defended the faith!

C-dude: No you didn’t.

Me: I’ve had the privilege (or so I thought) to lead people to Christ in 3 different languages. I’ve had a student ministry, adult ministry, children’s ministry and music ministry.

C-dude: No you haven’t.

Me: My lovely wife and I home-school our children and the decision was based on our Christian worldview.

C-dude: No you don’t and no it wasn’t.

Me: But, in total spite of the resulting inner turmoil and emotional agony caused by considering my faith and the existence of God, I found the intellectual hopscotch was no longer possible (it was dissonant, C-dude). I left the faith for strictly rational, well-researched, and thought out reasons.

C-dude: No you didn’t.

Me: My doubt and grief have turned to certainty and joy.

C-dude: No they haven’t.

Me: Wait a minute… I love my wife.

C-dude: No you don’t.

Me: I have a lawn mower.

C-dude: No you don’t.

Me: Ok, C-dude, I hate to burst your bubble, but your Christianity is not a relationship. It’s like this code with steps and guidelines, dare I say, rules – and even rewards for “good” and punishment for “evil.” So sorry dude, but it’s a religion.

C-dude: No it isn’t.

Me: Dude… you listen very well!!!!

C-dude: No I don’t

Me; I’m outta here. But one more thing. I never needed the threat of eternal damnation to love my wife and kids. Now that’s a real relationship!

C-dude: No it isn’t.

Me: There has to be a tunnel at the end of that light.

C-dude: Nope

Ah, that most tiring and predictable of methodologies: Argumentum ad Monty Python Argument Clinic.

For a belief system that delights in proclaiming "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free", why is it that so many evangelicals delight in telling ex-C's that our experiences never happened?

Simply put, it's an example of gaslighting -- A truly terrifying form of psychological abuse.

To all lurking still-Christians out there: Cease and desist, both here and in your Real Life gigs. You are not and probably never will be omniscient. You have access to your own experiences but not to ours. Accordingly, when you purport to tell us what *we* think and feel and believe, there is a high probability that you are lying.

Find another way of dealing with the quandary of our apostasies, please. Saying "No, you didn't" just makes you look like a jerk.

Hey Astreja, The Python approach seemed a good angle for the sentiments you express. It is precisely because of that lack of really listening by Christians to my recent Disney testimony that gave me the idea. And besides, there's nothing new under the sun -I see that a lot clearer now. Peace.

Liniasmax, not only do I enjoy what you have to say, I am entertained by the manner in which you say it!

Keep it up!

This is related to a phenomenon of denial that I have often run into, most recently a few days ago during a discusion on "Daylight Atheism." When confronted with the nefarious deeds of their coreligionists, Christians almost invariably come out with, "Oh they aren't real Christians, like I am." Not only do they feel free to deny our assertions of our mental/emotinal experiences, but also those of other Christians.

Great read!

In younger days of confusion, I suppose the feeling of lack of recognition comes with being the last name to have been drawn to participate in the schools sports events or school programs, everybody wants to fit-in not, wanting to be the introvert.

Also to think that you will be the only one left in hell all by yourself with Satan and Hitler...lol

We want to feel special, we want to feel like we can make a difference and change the world.

We want to be like Jesus, we want his recognition, we want to be thought of as supreme saintly ambassador to the world problems and by god and by reading the bible vervently we will, so it says...lol

When we read the bible, we soon go on a mission to save the lost from hell, this is our mission, the same as the over exagerated jesus, as written by an idiot Saul/Paul the two-faced hypocrite dope-head.

Then after years of seeing how foolish the whole concept is, we wonder how could we have been taken in so foolishly, but it is the personl identity we seek, we feel we have this special called purpose, only because our fathers inseminated our mothers and we think wow there must have been a special purpose for us all being here..nah, we're all just ramdom sperm that made it through and survived, and we'll all soon return to complete nothingness, unless we happen to be random sperm that survives in another world in another universe maybe billions of years later, who knows? Certainly not humans!

Well you gave it your best shot, and your best effort, so now you and we all know it was just a perpetrated lie. TC

It´s a miracle (sic) that conversations like that don´t end in a homicide or at least assault and battery.

"Did this man beat the living snot out of you?"
"...no, he didn´t.." (sobbing)

why is it that so many evangelicals delight in telling ex-C's that our experiences never happened?

Because those same evangelicals are scared to face the real truth about the lie that they believe, so they lie to themselves instead.

Christians don't like anything or anyone who threatens to kick their spiritual crutch out from underneath them.

<<< When we read the bible, we soon go on a mission to save the lost from hell, this is our mission, the same as the over exagerated jesus, as written by an idiot Saul/Paul the two-faced hypocrite dope-head. >>>

Paul also needed a spiritual crutch, because he became a "Has Been" who could no longer deal with reality. We have a lot of modern day Pauls living in the world today as a matter of fact.

Paul also probably never could get dates with women, and what better way to belittle women by using God as a means to do so.

Paul was the founder of the "Chauvinistic Movement".
