A challenge to creationists. Forward this to people that spew garbage..., and see if they have a head on their shoulders.

Video idea from 'Octamed'

Then who/what created god?

It's a little disappointing that so many people think that the statement just posted warrants serious consideration. It's also ironic that the person that left this could be a poster child for the people challenged in the video.

Man created God, God didn't create itself.

What a joke. Why is it that atheists are so easily persuaded by strawman arguments?

1) All life on this planet ultimately descends from a single-celled organism that came to life in a cosmic soup by some as yet unknown process.

2) Fossils are buried in rock layers in a seemingly progressive order.

3) An isolated system will become more disordered with time.

Why does God need a creator? Most theists believe that God created the entire universe (space, matter and time), so it is not necessary for God to have a beginning, since that is a concept based on time.

Then please explain how a being can exist without time? To be is a function of time.

What evidence do you have to support the idea that anything can be without time.

What evidence have you for a god? And which god did the creating?

Point 1 and 2 are correct

Point 3 appears to be an incorrect usage of the 2nd law of thermodynamics - the problem is that the person isn't recognizing that the earth is not a closed system. The sun provides a constant source of energy.

If you can accept god as eternal, then why can't you accept the universe as eternal?

This is a typical christian response. It is based on faith, hope, and religion. When the brainwashing wears off and you start to use thought ,reason, and science, evolution has taken place.

Even as a Christian, I must say that the first guy's comment was pretty naive and hard to back up, but if this website is meant for the sole purpose of ENCOURAGING ex-Christians, why post an arguement for atheism on it?

-----

This web site encourages those who have finally figured out that christianity is NOT true, and to help them cope with their new life free from superstition and organized religion. This site is not here to encourage them back into the fold.

From your question it seems like you are new here, so just so you know, many people who leave fundamentalist christianity do become atheists. Some become Deists, some remain Theists, and a few even remain christian, but in a much more liberal or watered down form.

Now as to why post an argument for atheism on this site, that is probably because they have some pretty good arguments that christians can't seem to refute.

Please stick around and read some. But I also ask you to please refrain from posting your comments and arguments until you have read and understand several of the testimonies and arguments put forth here.

And trust me, these are smart, sincere people that did not chuck christianity without much thought and prayer. Thus they do not tolerate fools lightly, so do your homework first. That is all the original video was about; A request or challenge for creationists to do their homework.

If you would like a meaningful response, please state your position more cogently. Which arguments do you claim are straw men? What are those points you listed supposed to represent? Are those indicative of the "arguments" you see as straw men? If you want your criticism to have some teeth (assuming that's even possible), please be clear about what you're criticizing. You might also wish to provide something to support your side (whatever that might be).

Whenever I read or hear an attempt at an argument against the Theory of Evolution, I find no evidence of scientific literacy. If I were a Creationist or pro-ID, I would have to correctly answer this challenge in order to have a meaningful debate. However, meaningful debate is impossible, as the opponents of evolution insist that we must explain why the universe did not need a creator/god. Their perverted logic makes it impossible to engage science in a meaningful way.

1) All life on this planet ultimately descends from a single-celled organism that came to life in a cosmic soup by some as yet unknown process.

So, you argue that if the process is unkown, then it must have been a god? This is a fallacious form of argument called argument from ignorance. Even if science had no clue at all about how life came about, you may not argue that because we don't know, "God did it." In any case, scientists have some excellent ideas about how life initially arose and are refining that knowledge continually. They'll let us know when they have a Theory (note the capitalization of that word -- scientific Theory is not what the lay person thinks it is, or mere conjecture; it is a highly developed view of a natural phenomena based on careful and objective observation, evidence, hypothesis and experimentation. Scientific Theory (like Germ Theory or the Theory of Gravity) is what the man on the street calls fact.)

2) Fossils are buried in rock layers in a seemingly progressive order.

And your point is? I hasten to add that here again, I think you are misunderstanding how evolution works. There's an assumption by many lay people, especially theists, that evolution means "progress" over time, from "primitive" to "advanced." Evolution just means change; "progress" is a human value which you are projecting on to the natural world. Having brains and opposable thumbs is not more "advanced" than insects having feelers; they are merely different solutions for fitting into an ecological/evolutionary niche.

3) An isolated system will become more disordered with time.

We're not isolated; an increase or sustaining of order on earth is at the expense of entropy in the sun, from whence we get all of our energy. Five billion years from now, the earth will pay the price when the sun has burned up all of its hydrogen and starts burning helium as it turns into the red giant star which will likely swallow up the Earth and maybe even Mars.

"Why does God need a creator? Most theists believe that God created the entire universe (space, matter and time), so it is not necessary for God to have a beginning, since that is a concept based on time."

Why is it necessary for the universe to have a beginning, why not save a step and say the universe (in one form or another) has always been here?

webmaster Dave,

Is there anything you can do about all these anonymous posts? It's getting annoying not knowing who is posting what for those of us who feel a response is warranted.

All anyone has to do is click on the Name/URL radio button and type in some sort of a nickname.

It's really quite easy, but some people seem unable to comprehend how to do it.
