News of interest to former Christians

The cave that 35 members of a Russian doomsday sect have been holed up in since the fall of 2007 is not currently at risk from flooding, a local emergency services official said on Thursday.

The sect went underground in the central Russian Penza Region order to “save themselves during the time of the apocalypse,” which they say will come in May this year.

This video is a Nov, 2007 report by Russia Today.

They have threatened to set fire to themselves if any attempt is made to force them to come to the surface. The group includes four children.

Russian emergency services officials said at the end of February they were ready to launch an operation to rescue the sect members in the event of the cave being submerged by underground waters in the spring thaw.

“Right now we are experiencing a temporary cold spell in the region,” said Dmitry Eskin, going on to say that, “The temperature is below zero. Dangers could be posed by underground waters, but given that the temperature has fallen that is fairly unlikely.”

He confirmed, however, that there were contingency plans in place to rescue the sect members if flooding occurred. Media reports earlier speculated that police and special forces were preparing to storm the cave. A police spokesman later denied these reports.

The cave is said to have been divided into five cells, with one large ‘room’ set aside for prayers. The prayer room is also, according to the sect’s founder Pyotr Kuznetsov, to be used for the eventual burial of the sect members. Kuznetsov is currently being treated for paranoid schizophrenia in an asylum in Penza, about 600 km (370 miles) southeast of Moscow.

Religion was tightly controlled in the U.S.S.R. and the collapse of the Soviet Union saw an explosion in sects and cults, as well as interest in New Age philosophies and beliefs. The back pages of many Russian tabloid newspapers are full of advertisements for ‘healers’ and ‘magicians’ who promise to bring happiness in love, success in business, as well as a range of other services.

One of the most well-known sects in Russia has its base near the southern Siberian town of Abakan, where thousands of people, both Russian and foreign, worship a former Russian provincial traffic policeman, Sergei Torop, as the second coming of Christ.

There are currently believed to be around 500-700 such sects in Russia, containing some 600,000-800,000 people.

We'll see what happens to them when May comes and goes without a whimper. Nuts come in all varieties and seem to be available all around the world.

I know the fall of the Soviet Union was a good thing, but I didn't take into account it would open Russia up the the religious insanity that has been a part of America for far too long. Hopefully, there's a version of
ExChristian.net somewhere over
there.

Anyway, according to some recent
programming on the History Channel,
there are prophecies ranging from
Nostradamus to the Aztec Indians to
the Bible, showing the world will
end on Dec. 21st, 2012. So, tell those people in the cave to chill
out..they've still got four more
years!

Hey, wait a minute. Didn't the Christians say the world was going to end at midnight, Dec.31st, 1999?

I'm so confused...

Me too...I thought God liked big round numbers?!

There would be no point trying to save the simple bastards. If
they die down there it will be considered
that "God wanted it that way".
At least they'll be out of the gene pool.

Why are they waiting there until the end of the world, though? Is the cave not in the world? Will the cave not end along with the world? If God will save them, can he not do it without the cave?

Oh, bullshit.

The officially atheist Russian government under the Soviets killed MILLIONS of believers BECAUSE of their religion.

Solzhenitsyn demonstrated this in his Gulag Archipelago series back in the 70's and later won a Nobel Prize for his efforts.

You can't pretend it didn't happen, but you never cry for those people.

YOUR LIES that ATHEISM had nothing to do with it don't change anything and you KNOW IT.

Andrew, to whom are you even replying? No one has said anything remotely related to the subject you've introduced. Atrocities were committed against religious people of various faiths in the former Soviet Union. You may be surprised to learn that there were also athiests and agnostics in the gulags. They had one thing in common with their religious co-prisoners: they either were or were viewed by the Soviet government to be dissenters or potential threats to the state.

Also, your indication that I or anyone who visits this site delights in the murder or oppression of anyone because they hold a particular religious conviction is a vicious lie. You have lied. Lying is considered a sin in most every organized religion. You are violating your own religious standards. You need to evaluate either yourself or your religious belief. Integrity is lacking in one or both.

Sincerely,
Beanheel

Andrew, you are talking out of your arse. Why do people like you insist on attacking atheists on their own site? You are a fool and unfortunately you may never know the true freedom of living your life freely and with dignity. That is what ATHEISM (thanks for the capital letters by the way) is all about.

You, however, are a walking talking zombie little christian man!

Andrew, your comment that, as athiests, we don't care about the genocide in the USSR is frankly offensive.

The USSR had a religion, it just had no deity. Stalin effectively replaced your insubstantial, wrathful Bible-God with a much more substantial, wrathful government. True athiesm does not mandate that anybody subscribe to any belief system other than the belief that we treat human life and liberty with the respect it deserves. What Stalin did was horrible, and compares quite nicely with the Inquisition, the Crusades, Nazism, Jihadism, and every single other genocide committed out of dogmatic belief.

When you allow reason and mutual respect to be your moral compass instead of blindly following whatever dogma your society is purporting at the time, you'll see that these acts are the same in nature and that they are all equally wrong.

why dont they just kill themselves and go to heaven!!!!!!why wait for the end? if they want to survive? what the hell for ...its heaven they want...why not go for it now!
If heaven is what they want...then die now? If they are right ...what point are they making by surviving the end? Kill each and everyone of you and skip the bullshit ....you stupid bunch of fearful people!

I agree - but the real issue is, their ideals haven't yet been eliminated from the meme pool.

Reason, cure to the memecomplex of religion. Sounds like I got a new chapter for my book!

I've often refered to fundamentalist fools as being cave dwellers. At least this crop of fools is living where their thinking places them.
