News of interest to former Christians

A Midlands church has lost $136,000. One of the people accused of taking it is the man who preaches every Sunday.

They're accused of doing one of the most deceptive things a church official could do. Church member Mary Sullivan says, "I was shocked."

Investigators think they were stealing money from the church. Lt. Phillip Crawford says, "I think we were all shocked when we first found out."

It happened at St. John's United Methodist Church in Lugoff. Pastor Gerald Lord is accused of using a church credit card to rack up a $16,000 bill that included all personal items, all over a two-year period. He'd only been there about three years.

Lea Ann O'Quinn, the church's bookkeeper but not a member of the church, is accused of using $120,000 of the church's money. Investigators say she used a church credit card for five years to help pay off her debts, and then used the church funds to pay off the credit card bill.

"I had no idea anything like that would be going on," says Sullivan. "I just wish it hadn't happened."

Investigators say when church administrators reported to O'Quinn that money was missing, she admitted what she had been doing and she also informed them about Pastor Lord's credit card.

Lt. Phillip Crawford says, "I think it's sad; but again, good people do bad things sometimes. It's not necessarily that they're bad people."

Sullivan says, "I think everybody was shocked and hurt, but I think everybody is going to pitch in and try to build from that and everybody makes mistakes. So, I think we will be better for it."

WIS News 10's Trey Paul spoke with Pastor Lord by phone. He wouldn't comment on his arrest, but he did say he loves his church, and his prayers and thoughts are with its members. O'Quinn couldn't be reached.

If convicted, they could both face up to 10 years in prison.

This is the second scandal to hit Saint John's United Methodist in the past couple of weeks. Saint John's is the same church where Russell Spitzer was a Committee Chair. The 49-year-old is the ex-Boy Scout leader charged with sending porn to one of the Boy Scouts. Shortly after Spitzer's arrest, Saint John's held a parent meeting to talk about the charges against the former scout leader.

Aghh, the transformative power of the 'Holy Spirit' alive and at work in the lives of Christians even today!

No! It can't be! Let me see if I understand this....Christians think their god is always watching, right? So if thid jerk was stealing money (both illegal and in violation of a commandment)makes one suspect the vslidity of his belief, doesn't it? Religion is a great haven for scallywags, pedophiles and con artists, I'd say..Jesus, are you awake? Jesus? Jesus?.....I guess he's playing golf...No one minding the store, Huh? .Oh well......

Ho Hum, just another day in Paradise. If this keeps up they'll have to heat the joint with a wood stove. Or, maybe they could just open up the door to hell and let in some heat. Hell must only be a yard away.

Because this is a sort of general article, and not a specific testimonial, I'll say this here...

I'm not sure if it's just because I just used a nickname instead of signing in with some account, but after I posted a recent comment, it said that the message needed approval. Since I'm an atheist backing up views of others, I have no doubt that it will be approved. However, I think that what separates us from the crazies (besides not being crazy) is the fact that we allow freer expression. Whenever I see that comments are screened, I lose some respect for the website (or YouTube video). Granted, anonymous Christians do mess with us too much, but that mostly shows how stupid, mean, and un-Jesus-like they are, rather than in any way discrediting us. Because of that, I think that the screening of messages should be done away with.

OK, I guess it was just one testimonial where I was screened. My comment showed up quickly here. Hmm...

Ricky, it happened to me also on the "Losing My Religion" thread as well.
http://exchristian.net/testimonies/2008/01/losing-my-religion.html

However, "blog administrator" filtering, was flipped on, after I submitted my response to a blogger; Samantha.

Quite fortunate, Samantha referenced the bible passage "believe all things" as "noble", and then revolted about when I suggested that she had the address for her God :-), I mean, based on her noble and logical passage, how could she not logically "believe me" in "all things" - how illogical of her.

In any event; the timing and scenario is interesting to say the least.

By the way, I'm not surprised about a pastor getting caught for stealing; in these days, I'd come to expect no less :-)

A simple message to the webmaster would have answered your question on blog filtering.

There is a Roman Catholic troll using IP masking who has been constantly spamming the testimonials on this site. He posts basically the same post over and over and over. He is a nut. He is the ONLY reason filtering has been put on. And his posts are the ONLY posts not getting through.

In the future, feel free to message me directly. Thanks.
