News of interest to former Christians

ATLANTA (AP) — An 80-year-old leader of a suburban megachurch who is at the center of a sex scandal has been charged with lying under oath for saying he had sex outside marriage with only one other woman, court documents show.

A warrant for the arrest of Archbishop Earl Paulk, co-founder of Cathedral of the Holy Spirit at Chapel Hill Harvester Church, was issued Monday, according to court documents. Paulk was making arrangements Monday night to turn himself in, WAGA-TV reported.

His attorneys did not immediately return calls from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Former church employee Mona Brewer is suing Paulk, his brother and the church on allegations that Paulk manipulated her into an affair from 1989 to 2003 by telling her it was her only path to salvation. In a 2006 deposition stemming from the lawsuit, the archbishop said under oath that the only woman he had ever had sex with outside of his marriage was Brewer.

But the results of a court-ordered paternity test revealed in October that Paulk is the biological father of his brother's son, D.E. Paulk, who is now head pastor at the church. As part of Brewer's lawsuit, eight women have given sworn depositions that they were coerced into sexual relationships with Earl Paulk.

A judge ordered the paternity test at the request of the Cobb County district attorney's office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. District Attorney Pat Head declined to comment when reached at his home Monday night.

Paulk and his brother, Don, have been hit with lawsuits from former members alleging they were coerced into sexual affairs, but this is the first time criminal charges have been filed against the archbishop.

Earl Paulk needs to go to jail. He has been a sex offender since at least 1960 but has always slithered out of consequences by threatening lawsuits against the women who spoke out against him. If left free he will continue to sexually abuse. He is absolutely vile. I was a member of his church for almost 14 years and I know the women personally who have spoken out against him. They are telling the truth without any shadow of a doubt. I hope Cobb Co throws the book at him.

I guess all these women were so brain dead that they didn't
know enough not to jump in his bed. This is just another case of religion bewildering people with it's doctrines.
His excuse will be that "god" said it was the right thing to do or maybe he'll use the old "the devil made me do it" routine.
Little by little these wackos are crapping in their own nests.

As I said, I know these women, and it's not a case of them being 'brain dead.' It's a question of those of us at the Cathedral being involved in a religous cult. I was there and there aren't many of us who wouldn't have stopped a bullet for him, or any of those pastors. What they told us to do, we did, because we believed they spoke for god, esp Earl. Scoff as you like, but if you weren't there or haven't experienced anything similar, you won't get it. Leave those brave women who are speaking out alone.

I have to agree with Anony, let's not "blame" the victims. At the same time, I wonder if any of the ladies had said "no", if that would have been the end of it? Of course from what Anony said, it sounds like saying "no" simply wasn't going to happen.

I applaud the powers that be in the cosmos which have made this possible. Let the mainstream media cover this story. Sickening.

For once I wish there was a hell for these assholes to go to. Oh well.
