News of interest to former Christians

At about 7 a.m. Monday, before heading for the federal courthouse, actor Wesley Snipes joined black ministers from churches in Orlando, Gainesville and Ocala for a prayer service.

Several ministers then came for the beginning of Snipes' trial on tax evasion charges. In front of the Golden-Collum Memorial Federal Building, they talked with reporters, saying they prayed for fairness, deliverance and God's favor.

The Rev. Frank E. Thompson, of The Worship Center Orlando, had organized the service at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Ocala.

"All the pastors came because, No. 1, Wes' from Orlando and we came to pray on his behalf," Thompson said.

"It's important not only to show support for him - but any person," said the Rev. Fred Maeweathers Sr., pastor of Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Ocala.

Snipes' lawyers had raised the issue of whether Snipes, as a black man, can get a fair jury in the Ocala Division of the Middle District of Florida.

"Can a person get a fair trial here or every county, everywhere in the state of Florida?" Maeweathers said. "That will be judged by history. And I don't know if there will be a difference. ... I believe that, if we trust in God, fairness comes through him."

Pastor Rozella Brown, of Tabernacle of Deliverance Outreach Ministries in Ocala, wanted to show her support for Snipes.

"He is our brother, and, as the Word of God says, we are our brother's keeper," Brown said.

"Basically, the purpose of the prayer was that God would grant favor and that God would give deliverance for Brother Snipes and that he would also have a fair trial."

Pastor Glenda Sesler of Ocala's Everlasting Light of God Outreach Ministry said she attended the service to lend the strength that comes with unity.

"I was there," Sesler said, "to show my brotherly love and just to show him that we love him."

So, I can only assume that these preachers spend all day, every day meeting to pray with ALL of the multitudes of black citizens in Florida who are facing criminal charges? Man, I think that's great. Totally selfless on their part, and it certainly must be very uplifting for the black citizens of Florida to be met by these Ministers of God to pray with them before facing their charges. I mean, of COURSE they meet with ALL of the brethren, right? It's not just because Snipes is a rich Hollywood actor who might someday throw some cash their way? I mean, that would just be absurd, and I'm trying not to assume the worst about them just because they're preachers.

I think that Snipes and all these ministers are going to find that the IRS is not the least bit afraid of their god.

When I was a Christian, I had a Christian friend who believed the US government had no right to tax people. He purposely did not file his taxes one year and the IRS came after him pretty quick. He was part of a group of Christians who believed this sort of crap.

Not that I like all taxes, but mix this kind of thinking with religion and you get some really wacko ideas. After reading more of Snipes' case I wonder if he got sucked into one of those Christian groups.

They sure will Anonymous.

Oh, just one tiny qualification though.
You also have to be a Vampire to receive that special prayer attention.

Okay, Wesley Snipes is the last person I was expecting to follow the same path as Dr. Dino with the whole fundamentalist Christian tax evasion thing.

Well, they all drink the blood of Jesus.

Have you seen the vampire nightclub scene in Blade?
Yep, I think that's what it's like to be 'washed in the blood'.

Hi Space',

Yes, I am very familiar with the Blade movies.
I find the parallels between vampires, cannibals, and the ritual of eating the body/blood of the jesus 'god', to be quite remarkable.

You really have to wonder why a god would want his followers to routinely go through a repeating ritual of eating his human body, if only in-spirit?
I guess if you look at the OT god, who was big on sacrifices, that he might have some odd fetish for us humans taking a bite out of his only son, with a little blood to wash it all down....YUMMY (not).

Hey, if vampires drink human blood to keep their eternal lives going, then maybe that is god's plan for how he'll give his special believers their eternal lives as well.
I wonder if xtians know when they get to heaven, they'll still have to eat, but it won't be the food they are used to now.

One might argue that jebus wasn't large enough to feed such a multitude of heaven-residers, but we already saw how jebus can multiply food and drink.

I wonder if his toes are considered a delicacy?
What about those rocky-mountain oyster parts?

*sigh*

With Blade IV rumors circulating, I have hopes to see the Blade movie saga continue, despite how crazy Snipes apparently is. If there is a Blade IV, and it is succesful, we'll see how long Snipes hangs around these groups THEN.
