Bernando Álvarez said that there are 13-year-olds who are wanting to be abused, and 'if you are careless they will provoke you'

There is outrage in parts of Spanish society following declarations made over Christmas from the Bishop of Tenerife, Bernardo Álvarez.

His comments were that there are youngsters who want to be abused, and he compared that abuse to homosexuality, describing them both as prejudicial to society. He said that on occasions the abuse happened because the there are children who consent to it.

‘There are 13 year old adolescents who are under age and who are perfectly in agreement with, and what’s more wanting it, and if you are careless they will even provoke you’, he said.

Regarding homosexuals, the Bishop said that homosexuality was something prejudicial to the people and to society, and that we would pay the consequences in the long term.

The Bishop claimed that both abuse of children and homosexuality would lead to future problems in society ‘as has occurred in other civilisations’.

"There are 13 year old adolescents who are under age and who are perfectly in agreement with, and what’s more wanting it, and if you are careless they will even provoke you"

The statements were made by the Bishop to his flock on Christmas Eve, in an interview given to the La Opinión de Tenerife local newspaper.

A later statement from the Bishop's residence on Tenerife explained that the Bishop did not intend to imply that ‘an event as condemnable as the abuse of youngsters’ could be justified.

The Triángulo Canarias Foundation for the Social Equality of Gays and Lesbians commented that the Bishop’s statements on homosexuality were inadmissible, as were comments he made considering being gay an illness.

I think this sorry man is saying outright what Christianity has generally practiced for years. When I begged my preacher for help, I had to listen to him telling social services that I had tempted my father, and had been doing so for many years. Imagine thinking you would go to Hell eternally for living there as a child. . .

I am both comforted and disgusted to learn it wasn't just me. . . Thank you for bringing this sick trend of thinking to light, and exposing it for the B.S. it really is.

How cliché.

Ranks right up there with "the devil made me do it".

Hmmm...I wonder what his track record is and if the term "Freudian slip" is appropriate.

Once again, Christians accept the "blame the victim" argument as valid. (Then again, all the people killed by the Isrealites were being punished simply because god did not choose them...but that was their fault.)

Assholes.

Talk about spin . . . and "provoke"? I was under the impression(not really, but you get the gist) that the clergy were supposed to be of infinite patience and virtue. Who'd have thought the devilish youngsters could override the sanctity of these holy men? Gosh, Beav, that'll teach ya to stand so close to the Rev!

This wacko is the product of a sick, oppressive religion in a sick, oppressive society. The day that we stop feeling compassion for the young victims of immoral and criminal acts is the day we give up our right to call ourselves human beings. That person has proved himself to be nothing more than a maggot feeding off the shit of religion in order to metamorph into a big ugly, nasty, shit-eating fly that preys on society and creates more of its kind. The only recourse we, as a society has is to swat it and destroy it's source of sustenance.

Unfortunately, there are millions of people in the world who will continue to give their hard-earned money to this giant maggot infested institution which not only proves them to be incredibly gullible but also makes them accomplices in these vile crimes.

As a mother of four and grandmother of one I am rather surprised that there are not more outraged parents going after these maggots and shutting them down! If it were MY CHILD I would not rest until they were all either dead or behind bars!

But then, I actually have an open relationship with my kids and we actually spend time together and talk about things and, like many rational, free-thinking parents, I teach my kids to think for themselves and to protect themselves from potential predators.

When you teach your kids to trust a guy just because he wears a funny robe, a scout uniform or a badge then you are teaching them to be vulnerable and stupid. However, that does not give ANYONE the right to violate a child, EVER!

Got nothing else to say about this abominable quote.

Sounds to me like the good bishop is either speaking very unwisely or has great faith in his authority.

I hope his followers realize it's more of the former.

(sarcasm) Well you know, those damn kids would not get abused if they would all jsut sit down shut up and do what they are told! it is all their fault, i mean why should i learn to control my own stupidity when THEY provoke me to immaturity and wrath? (/sarcasm)

sheesh.

This vile organiation (catholic church) never ceases to amaze me with the horseshit they constantly spew forth from their asses. This sick fucker has no right to be in any position of authority. But then again, the new motto of the Vatican is: "Abstinence makes the church grow fondlers."

Religion seems to always blame the victim. A woman was raped in Saudi Arabia and they sentenced her to get lashed with a whip. The king pardoned her only after word got out to the press, and caused embarassment. A friends wife was also told by a preacher that her family problems were her own fault, and that he could not help her. Religious people are just arrogant and lazy. Religion needs to go away!
