News of interest to former Christians

A controversial Christmas card reading “O come all ye faithless” has been strongly criticized by Christians as an “ill judged and insensitive joke.” Borders book stores began giving away the card free with every copy of Richard Dawkins’ well known atheist work, The God Delusion, this Christmas.

The Rev. Jonathan Edwards, general secretary of the Baptist Union of Great Britain. said the idea was “crass.”

“I am quite sure that Borders intended their Christmas card as a joke. However, I personally find it an ill-judged and insensitive joke,” he said, as reported by Baptist Times.

He continued, “Christians have always been used to being punch bags but I would have hoped that, in a society in which we are seeking to show respect to all people and beliefs, we might have grown out of this kind of nonsense.”

He was supported by Justin Thacker, head of theology at the Evangelical Alliance, who said, “It won't surprise me if this spectacularly fails. Christmas still holds a high place in people's hearts - I think a lot of people will be offended by it."

Borders has responded to the criticism by issuing a statement which said it “did not intend it as anti-Christian or a swipe at the Christian faith,” and said that it “apologizes to any of our customers who feel it was that,” according to Baptist Times.

The book store described the card as a “continuation” of the debate on atheism that had come as result of the book, which was a bestseller for Borders this year.

“Our customers are intelligent, curious people who enjoy exploring all types of books and music. Naturally, some of the thousands of books and music selections we carry could be considered controversial or objectionable depending on individual views, tastes and interest,” Borders said in a statement.

"However, Borders stands by its commitment to let customers make the choice.”

The Evangelical Alliance's Thacker noted, “I think the atheists will love it because it's bashing Christians around the head. It's another thing to take a Christian festival and abuse it.

"Borders wouldn't do this to any other religious festival. Borders [has] made a strategic mistake and Christians will boycott it.”

When will these people understand that this celebration is not "theirs"?
They moved their celebration so it collides with several older celebrations and 'cupped' older traditions and now they claim ownership of what they stole? Weird!

The Xtian community's selective vigilance for something new to take offence at, and their arrogant assumption of entitlement knows no bounds.

Ironic is that Christopher Hitchens is also boycotting Borders book-signings because they caved in to unwarranted pressure and bullying from a religious lobby. They better get down to some serious introspection, or at least some fancy damage control moves, at Borders before too long.

That reminded me of my deconversion. My first words against the buybull.

"Oh, yeah, faith of so little."

It was a spin off of "oh, yeah of little faith." My faith produced so little. I realized the xtian faith was a shame at that point when it produced little to nothing.

Because they are so persecuted, of course. Show me a Christian that doesn't claim a persecution and I'll show you a false Christian.

There is no greater nonsense that the nonsense of religions. But we'll probably never grow out of that nonsense. Jim Earl

Aaawwww, poor, poor Christians. We took away their right to have witch hunts, Crusades, Inquisitions, their rights to have multiple wives (but not mutiple husbands), their rights to beat said wives, and their rights to kill their children when they "act up". And let us not forget that we have persecuted them by denying them their right to force the rest of the world to bow down to their God through violence, threats and intimidation.

*sigh*

Christians . . . if you have any sense left, you will do us all a favor, and SHUT THE FUCK UP. This is why more and more people, every day, are taking Christianity less seriously. Not only are the claims ridiculous, but it's easy to see that the people that believe them are absurd, too. You're not helping your cause, Christians. Instead of doing things to help humanity, you sit in your air-conditioed churches, bitching and whining about gays, liberals, and non-Christians. I am SOO glad I am no longer one of you. The few decent, good-hearted Christians out there do not justify the vast number of you with your heads up your asses. It is a shame that good people like that are kissing your asses because they know no other option.

Christians would be the first in line for their Hell if it was real.

Poor abused Christians… They’re like the African Americans of the religious world… To remain a Christian, with all the abuse they encounter is really quite amazing.

They’re all saints!

Seriously… If, just for one day, Christians encountered a small portion of the discrimination they’ve dealt to other religions, to minorities, to gays, to women etc, they’d abandon their cult.

To complain that people are making fun of THEIR religious festival when they stole every aspect of that religious festival from other religions, suggests either a mind-numbing level of hypocrisy or a complete lack of historical knowledge (or both).

What a bunch of babies.

It doesn't really even attack Christianity.

Where is their omnipotent god to protect them from criticism? Maybe he got sick and tired of protecting such weak idiots and abandoned them.

Christians are such pansies! Hey god, I just insulted your people - come get me!

The time is way overdue to stop catering to the brain damaged fantasies of the mentally ill. We do not need to respect their beliefs anymore than we need to respect those of a schizophrenic or an 'alien abductee'. These people need help, for sure, but their beliefs don't deserve respect.

Christians? Persecuted? In the USA, a person becomes president by "confessing Jesus!" Anyone who does not do so really does not stand a chance at being elected! Oh, they're SO persecuted!

Want discrimination? I was once fired for telling a christian he's going to hell! Another visitor to this website reported having been fired for wearing a religious symbol around his neck. All around, his co-workers were wearing crosses and THEY weren't fired!

The rev. Jonathan Edwards is quoted as having said that christians are "seeking to show respect to all people and beliefs."

Mr. Edwards cannot speak for all christians and, frankly, can only speak for himself.

I personally have seen disrespect for other religious beliefs on the part of christians.

So, one meager Christmas card offends them?

How about the millions of them which offend us?

What happened to democracy? Geeez!

Blogger twincats said...
That's what xtian democracy IS:

They get to call non xtians (except for jewish folk who they pretend to support and muslims who scare them) morality-challenged, society-ruining, un-american (or nationality of your choice), unpatriotic, unhappy, devil-worshipping, sexually depraved, and other descriptives. These are just some of their favorites.

Meanwhile, anyone who challenges their faith or points out their shortcomings is oppressing them and it mustn't be allowed; there oughta be a law, etc.

Trancelation said it: "You're not helping your cause, Christians."

They get more ridiculous and pathetic every day.

A mocking holiday card is PERSECUTION? Give me a break. They've got a whole section of Christian books in Borders. I think their call to remove the card does equal censorship and persecution of the reasonable minded to express what they believe.

Anonymous Madame M said...
I'm not seeing how one card passed out to people who are buying an atheist book is equivalent to beating Christians about the head.

So basically this whiner is crying that there needs to be tolerance and acceptance while simultaneously denying others the right to express themselves as they see fit during the holiday.

Why does everything they don't like end with someone crying "Boycott!!"? It's gotten to be like the boy who cried wolf...so many calls for boycotts over so many rediculous things that nobody takes any of seriously anymore. What a joke.

Anonymous whateverlolawants said...
Oh brother! I like the sound of that card and want to get it! I think it's funny. I don't think it mocks Christianity, and even if it does, so what? Do these Christian groups realize that Borders sells a lot of atheist/non-Christian themed books? I don't understand why this card, of all things, is leading to a boycott, if Borders selling such unchristian books hasn't.

They love boycotting so much, why don't they boycott a company that's actually doing something wrong? You know, like companies that pollute or something.

Just more proof that Christianity, and religion, have no place in the world.

This just goes to show that xtians would go back to mass book burning if they could, these "persecuted" little twits.

“Features distorted in the flickering light
The faces are twisted and grotesque
Silent and stern in the sweltering night
The mob moves like demons possessed
Quiet in conscience, calm in their right
Confident their ways are best
The righteous rise With burning eyes Of hatred and ill-will
Madmen fed on fear and lies To beat, and burn, and kill!”*

Does this sound like atheists persecuting xtians? Or more like xtian persecution of others as recorded in history?

However gay pride parades still happen, and nobody in the "Real World" gives a shit what these bible beating assholes do, or think.

Here are some parodies of christian songs that I came up with.

PARODY OF AWESOME GOD:
"Our God, Is an Awful God".

PARODY OF I'D RATHER HAVE JESUS:
"I'd rather have personal success than a crutch named Jesus."

PARODY OF HOLY, HOLY, HOLY:
"Boring, Boring, Boring Church is so boring".

And here's the best one:

AMAZING GRACE PARODY:
"An Amazing Disgrace that God really is, who lied to an individual like me. I once was lost, but now I've found my way back to reality".

From the post: "The Evangelical Alliance's Thacker noted, “I think the atheists will love it because it's bashing Christians around the head. It's another thing to take a Christian festival and abuse it."

First of all, as others have pointed out, it's not really a Christian festival -- they only stole it from the pagans because they could not stamp it out. Over all, Dec 25 has been more secular than religious, despite the Xians' centuries long effort to make it theirs and theirs alone.

Secondly, "Oh come, all ye faithless" to me is not about bashing Christians, but is instead an invitation for the faithless to gather. This, of course, is what they fear, that atheists, normally a group of cats that one of us tries to herd unsuccessfully from time to time, might actually unite.
