Atheist Fernando Aguilar of Walla Walla reads extensively to learn about the world around him and believes it's possible to live a moral life without religion. "Live your life the way you want other people to live. Enjoy family. Do something in the community that helps others. It's the community and family, to me, that are most important," he said.

When mortar shells were exploding near Fernando Aguilar in Iraq, he didn't pray to God for help.

He doesn't believe God exists. And his long-held conviction didn't change when he traveled to a war zone.

Aguilar, 55, of Walla Walla, is a civil engineer and his work has taken him to some of the most dangerous places in the world. He's been to Iraq twice and Afghanistan once since 2003, helping to build water systems, hospitals and schools.

He's also done relief work in Southeast Asia and volunteered in Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina.

Using the skills he has to benefit others is part of the code Aguilar lives by.

He has a soft voice and he chooses his words with care. He's kind and he dotes on guests.

What We Believe
This week, the Herald is featuring a handful of men and women from different faith traditions as part of a seven-part series, "What We Believe."

Their stories are personal, but they speak to universal truths about faith, God and people in the Mid-Columbia and beyond.

Monday: A Kennewick woman discovers Buddhism in her 50s, and through it a way to connect spirituality to her daily life.

Tuesday: An act of kindness at Christmas helps a young Christian man from Pasco feel God's love.

Wednesday: A cooking teacher from Kennewick turns part of her kitchen into a shrine honoring the Hindu gods who've kept her safe.

Thursday: A Muslim teacher from Richland educates people about the faith he loves.

Today: A Walla Walla man who dodged mortar fire in Iraq says his atheism gives his life meaning.

Saturday: A Jewish woman from Kennewick feels close to God when she prays with her friends.

Atheism
Atheists believe that God doesn't exist.

An atheist is different from an agnostic, who believes it's impossible to know whether God exists.

Aguilar and his longtime love, Yvonne Hall, share a house that's filled with colorful murals she's painted. One of them is of the couple dancing. Hall is wearing an orange dress and Aguilar is smiling.

She understands his beliefs about religion because she's atheist too.

Aguilar grew up in the Pacific Northwest and served as a Catholic altar boy. He can remember being puzzled by Holy Communion.

People told him the bread and wine transformed into Christ's body and blood. But to him, the bread still tasted like bread. The wine was still just wine.

He didn't see how anyone could ever walk on water.

Aguilar realized he was an atheist when he was 24.

He's not afraid to speak his mind when it comes to God. He believes people should be able to pray, read Scriptures and practice their faith. But he doesn't think religion belongs in courts or schools.

He's been active in the national American Atheists organization and once clashed with the Walla Walla City Council because members were starting the meetings with prayer. The council eventually went to having a moment of silence.

Aguilar says no two atheists hold exactly the same views because atheism isn't a belief system. It's simply a way of describing someone who doesn't believe there's a God.

For Aguilar, that's the only take that makes sense. He's an engineer, and he understands what he can measure and prove.

He believes that when you die, your mind and consciousness die too. That urgency gives his life meaning.

He tries to be a good partner to Yvonne and a good father. He has a daughter in college and son who's a teacher, and he beams when he talks about them.

He tries to help other people when he can. That's what he believes in.

"Ultimately, the way you live your life should be fruitful for those around you so you leave the world a little bit better," he said. "(People) will remember you for that."

Yvonne told a story about when Aguilar was in Iraq he didn't pray to God when the mortar rounds were exploding around him. He turned to a friend and asked if she needed help.

What happened to this post? It looks like a good one but it's got messed up.

Looks like the definition of atheism is morphing again.

Whatever.

But I like the line about no two atheists agreeing on anything.

That way, a murdering scumbag like Lenin or Trotsky or Stalin or Mao or take your pick can kill off believers BECAUSE he hates their guts BECAUSE he is an atheist but since no two atheists agree...you can't blame atheism.

Cleveeeeeeeeeeerrr!!!

Manual,

There is nothing cleveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer about it.

You have to show that those people mentioned killed off people because they were believers.

The fact they were atheists (and I'm not even sure they all were) has nothing to do with it. They "may" have been atheists, but they were not killing BECAUSE they were atheists. It's a distinction you fundies seem to have trouble comprehending.

Manuel:

The point that no two atheists agree is a non-sequitor in any argument. If you dig deep enoough, you will find that no two people agree on anything, peroid. Certainly no two Christians that I have ever met agree on Christianity. But that is all beside the point.

Christians love bringing up characters like Hitler, Stalin, Mao, etc., etc., etc., but the fact is that these men were not atheist. Atheism is non-belief in a theistic system, and replacing a fictional God with a non-ficitional man with fictional powers does not atheism make. The dictators of our world are nothing if not religious, for they view themselves as gods. They ignore any evidence to the contrary. Hussein fought to regain his regime unto his death. He was very much sure that he was a god. THAT is religious, not atheistic.

When I see Christians bringing up these characters, it is always in rapid succession, a peak around the corner of a wall and firing a gun blindly, a spray-and-pray. I think this is because Christians know this is a weak argument, especially for the existence of God and the veracity of Christianity in general. I've cut down this argument hundreds of times now. Christians have never, not ONCE, provided evidence that these dictators were atheist, only that they were not Christian. And yes, Christians, I am aware that if someone does not believe in YOUR God, they believe in NO GOD, at least according to your childish, lame, pathetic, ignorant, and downright insipid attempts at logic. Of course, we non-believers know better.

And now I will close this post with my trademark aggressiveness: Christians, go fuck yourselves. You're not fooling anybody.

Golden shower,

First, might I suggest you look up Christian Communism? Furthermore, if you review history and think long and hard about this issue, what you'll notice is that these Communist leaders that you and your Christian brethren unceasingly keep trying to pin on "Atheism", are symbolically taking the "place" of "God"...i.e..."Worship me!...OR DIE!"(God); I am your MASTER!(God); my way, or the highway!(God); I am the final authority on EVERYthing!(God)

In other words, they weren't killing in the name of "no God"---they were killing in the name of "I AM God".

Nice try, though.

Thank you, boomslang. My point exactly. There really should be a mainpage post on this, something that Christians can be referred to every time they bring this up, so we don't spend so much time and effort stating the obvious.

FYI: Manuel is a longerm troll who usually posts as Emanuel Goldstein and continually denegrates and demonizes anyone or anything associated with atheism.

I believe that no matter what is posted on the main page, it wouldn't help much. The disclaimer page is linked on the "Leave your comment" Blogger page, yet how many Christians even bother to read it?

Webmaster,

That's pretty much his 'MO' and has been for as long as I've been here.

I don't think a testimonial goes by that he doesn't jump-right-in to make some unkind remark. In fact, many times he's the first 'person' to make a comment, which means he's obviously reading everything posted, but yet is mysteriously immune to any and all forms of reasoning.

I sure would like to understand why such a hard-minded xtian would take the time and effort here, to do as he does.
Wouldn't his time be far better spent in his church, helping his fellow worshippers who are in-need of human assistance.
Oh silly me, how could I think that xtians would ever need HUMAN assistance, as their god provides ALL their day-to-day earthly needs.

Mister Goldstein, your 'grand' efforts here are pretty much fruitless.
While you may get-your-rocks-off by berating folks here, you sure aren't having any significant influence in winning souls for your god team.

You efforts would be far better utilized by standing on a street corner in your city, while wearing a sign that says 'FIND GOD FAST---THE SKY IS FALLING'.
I'm fairly sure that some 'passerby' will show up take up your cause.

ATF (Who often wondered about the utter blindness of the "Flat Earth" folks, but doesn't have to look very far to see it at work right here)
