News of interest to former Christians

CHURCH leaders in Redhill and Caterham have expressed their shock and condemned a website which claims to "name and shame" them.

Redhill Baptist Church and Caterham Baptist Church appear on The Anti-Church Forum website, which contains a list of more than 100 churches.

Redhill Baptist Church has been labelled "dead as a doorknob" and Caterham Baptist church has been dubbed "just plain dull" on the site.

Pastor James Collins, of Redhill Baptist Church, in Hatchlands Road, said: "Having had a look at this curious and, in places, inaccurate and unpleasant website I am baffled by the categorisation of Redhill Baptist Church as dead as a doorknob.

"Ours is a lively church with busy and well attended Sunday services and many community activities that meets the practical and spiritual needs of hundreds of people.

"I can't help wondering whether our presence on the website reflects anyone's genuine involvement with the church."

The Rev Keith Johns, of Caterham Baptist Church, in Beechwood Road, said: "Some of the things on the site are quite shocking and I want to distance the church and myself from them.

"My particular objection to the site is that it fails to make any distinction between the churches. There's a scatter gun approach and it just writes off all the churches as the same."

The website, which has had more than 24,000 visitors, was set up as a forum for people to discuss their faltering faith by 35-year-old Jonathan Castro, who used to attend Caterham Baptist Church.

Mr Castro, who works as a transport planner and moved to Guildford three months ago, claims to have visited many of the Surrey churches on his list.

The self-proclaimed "ex-Christian" said: "I set up the website two years ago because I became very disillusioned and thought God wasn't what he was hyped up to be.

"The whole worship process has become too charismatic, with jazz bands and popular music.

"Appointing women vicars and allowing homosexuals to go to church is just hypocrisy and I thought it was contradictory to what the Bible says."

The website which contains articles entitled "Why Church Sucks" and "Stupid Church Creed" is also used as a discussion forum for Christians and non-Christians from across the globe.

Mr Castro said: "I used the website to express my feelings and it was set up for people who were struggling and hadn't found God in their life either.

"I wanted to be a true believer but felt so let down."

Mr Castro says that his involvement with the website has dwindled in the two years since he set it up,but still logs in to check up on what is being written by others.

I was confused by Mr. Castro's statements about gays and women clergy. Is he against that, or just against hypocrisy by the church?

Well chucky jesus, it's not like trying to get an aswer from god about the confusion that the bible creates.

I did go to the website to see if there was a way to contact him but could't find an e-mail address or anything. You may have better luck.

You could ask around in the forum or something. You may be given a method of contact that way. I think he'd be more than happy to clear up the matter for you.

Again, it's not like trying to contact god.

I don't understand, is he an ex-chrstian or a really disgruntled Bible believer. On his "Why Church Sucks" page he says:

"Church is full of women, children, gays and wimps."

Maybe he is an ex-christian but hates gays and women. Or maybe he is an ex-church goer but really still believes, but he doesn't speak like he does. I don't really get it.

The guy who runs the web site in question has some serious issues... here's my interpretation of him: He seems to be someone who had a particular extreme "anti-establishment" interpretation of the bible, and was frustrated with the institution for not agreeing with him. Now he's left religion behind, but he still apparently has hold-over views from his "persecuted prophet" days. Definitely not a terribly good ex-christian site.

Hi all - I am the owner of the anti-church forum. So let me clarify a few things...

First, I grew up in the church, and for a long time when I was genuinely seeking God, I saw things in church that contradicted the Bible, so wondered what was the point of going - they're just useless and hypocritical organisations that don't give a toss about the scriptures.

Second, the comment about gays, women and children in church needs to be read as a whole. The point was that there are hardly, if any, real men in church. The feminisation of church has made it appeal almost solely to the feminine sex and feminine males.

Third, I wouldn't have a problem with the established church if it weren't for the pointlessness of going. If you never meet God in any church, what's the point of any of them?

Fourth, I would call myself a non-believer (whatever that means) who never *really* grasped what Christianity was about. I have no idea what constitutes "real faith", and I am certain most people who go to church haven't either.

Fifth, the negative characteristics of church that I have listed do not apply to every church, but there are an awful lot where they do.

This site sounds like a great idea. It would be cool if someone came up with something better organized for American churches. There are a few I'd like to put on that list!

For jdcastro, I would like to say the following:
Firstly, I'm sorry that you never met God personally. It sounds like you met human frailty instead. God did give us free will, and like everyone else the church is not exempt from error. That's why God also provides forgiveness.
Secondly, in relation to your belief that the church has become feminine, I would like to challenge your understanding of what a "real man" is supposed to be. Is it someone who seeks power and control over others, and uses his size and strength to dominate. Or is it someone who has psychological and emotional strength to be compassionate but assertive, strong but gentle, wise but also jocular? In a current culture that undermines the human spirit constantly, and fails to protect its weakest members, I find it easy to believe that anyone would want to criticise a person regardless of gender, who are wanting improve themselves and their life experience, but harder to belive that someone would want to actually support such efforts.
Thirdly, on the point of meeting God. People can meet God anywhere. If you did indeed "grow up in the church" as you say you have, I find it hard to believe that you would not know that God and His Spirit are everywhere and that all we need to do is to call on Him in faith. No we do not need church buildings to have faith in God or to experience Him, however it is important that we find others with like minds to challenge us, support us and to be witness to.
Which brings me to point four. If you never found God or even understood "the whole faith thing", then my friend you cannot call yourself a Christian, which by definition is a believer in and follower of CHRIST. Therefore, you are by defition only a churchgoer, of which the world has plenty of. As such your site SHOULD be called "ex-churchgoer" if we are seeking correctness.
Your disillusionment of the church is common, as people are more prone to see people's failure rather, even their own, before they would place trust and hope in something or Someone who might instead be dependable, encouraging, protective and forgiving of all those human frailties that get in our way.
I do hope that you get back to searching one day, and that God will lead you in a direction that proves Himself and His presence in you life.

Thanks for the replies.

As you have said, I was mistaken about myself being a Christian, as I don't believe I am.

According to your theory God is everywhere and all we have to do is call on him in faith. Well, my experience has proved otherwise. There is no God out there to hear prayer, and the thousands of prayers I offered during all of my searching only fell on deaf ears.

I believe that I have my faults (many of them), but I thought God could work in my life despite them. However I have learnt over all the years that God has no interest in me whatsoever, and that either he does not exist, or he is remote from the world. Either make any consideration of God completely pointless.

regards,

Jon.

It looks like we have another Anonymous DumbAss Christian trying to push the same old worn out propaganda on us again.

Goddamn, do these people never give up? Are christians really that fucking stupid?

Hey Anonymous!

Tell your God to speak to us if he wants to get our attention. Until then, you have no credibility.

Now go bug someone else.

What's wrong with that?

Are men supposed to go around scratching their balls, and acting tough all of the time?

I realize if you act like a "Real Man" that means you are supposed to have an IQ of 3, you think with your dick instead of your brain and real men are not supposed to talk about their feelings and emotions.

ANONYMOUS FUNDY SAID:
"People can meet God anywhere."

Really now? I take it that you have met God in person? Can you please provide a photo of you and him?

Plus the next time you talk to God, ask him why he never shows up here for dinner? He keeps on standing me up.

ANONYMOUS FUNDY SAID:
"Your disillusionment of the church is common"

Your disillusionment of God is common also. Just like it is with all of you christian whackos.

ANONYMOUS FUNDY SAID:
"I do hope that you get back to searching one day"

Why should I search for him? He just needs to show up. He said in his "Holey Buybull" that he would, be there, and he never is. Why should I search after him again?

ANONYMOUS FUNDY SAID:
"and that God will lead you in a direction that proves Himself and His presence in you life."

You can't follow someone's lead who you can't see.

My only God that I need for guidance is my own intellectual thinking. Not some ancient myth.

BTW, if you have nothing else better to do with your time than post your gospel messages about Christ on the internet, I've heard that McDonalds is now hiring.

I take it anon, that this statement doesn't just apply to jdcastro, but to all of us here.
That being the case, I'm also sorry to......

I'm sorry you never met my Pink Unicorn personally. She really did survive that big god flood ya know, even though your god tried to take-her-out in his kill-all flood.

I'm sorry you never met my Fire Breathing Dragon (Puff) personally, as he loves to show off his talent for cooking marshmallows. Puff would never set fire to any human, unlike your god is infamous for doing.

I'm sorry you never met the true Santa Claus. Perhaps you failed to visit the real north pole or maybe you pissed off one of his flying reindeer. A pissed-off reindeer would surely have taken you to the sinning south pole Santa instead.

I'm sorry you never met my hero Hercules personally. I'd introduce you to him, but he's a bit busy these days acting as one of those biblical pillars that holds up the whole earth in space.

I'm sorry you never met my Sun-God personally. He does tend to show up pretty much on a daily basis, but one has to be careful about staring at him for too long, otherwise you might land up blind....Blind; like the blindness that all you xtians get from looking at your own fantasy god for too long a time.

ATF (who wonders why xtians reject the more fun mythical beings and yet, choose to worship a god who is not only sadistic, but suffers from an inferiority complex)

I'm sorry that you have never met Mr. Spock or Captain Kirk either.

Or the Orion Green Slave Girls. Especially them.

For you christians who choose to worship your false God named Jesus, you deny the existence of "Stovokor".

Anyone who denies the existence of "Stovokor" will have no honor when they die.

You will be sent to Romulan Hell when you die if you reject "Stovokor".

Worf,
I'll be more than willing to convert to your brand of religion, but only if you're willing to share your green slave girls from Orion's belt???
