News of interest to former Christians

Rev. Rick Mason notes that atheism is on the rise. He blames Christian fundamentalism. Certainly the ineptness, dishonesty and lack of ethics of the overtly God-fearing Bush administration may be turning people off on God.

A case study shows what this could mean for America. Norway has embraced secularism at the expense of its Christian roots. A 2005 survey conducted by Gallup International rated Norway the least religious country in Western Europe.

In Norway, 82.9 percent of the population are members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church (they are automatically registered at birth and few bother to be unregistered). However, only approximately 10 percent regularly attend church services and identify themselves as being personally Christian.

A 2006 survey found: 29 percent believe in a god or deity; 23 percent believe in a higher power without being certain of what; 26 percent don't believe in God or higher powers; 22 percent have doubts.

Depending on the definition of atheism, Norway thus has between 26 percent and 71 percent atheists. The Norwegian Humanist Association is the world's largest humanist association per capita.

And what has secularism done to Norway? The Global Peace Index rates Norway the most peaceful country in the world. The Human Development Index, a comparative measure of life expectancy, literacy, education and standard of living, has ranked Norway No. 1 every year for the last five years.

Norway has the second highest GDP per capita in the world, an unemployment rate below 2 percent, and average hourly wages among the world's highest.

SHHHH!

Don't tell the fundies or they'll go over there to "save" 'em and ruin it.

I'm certainly not a christian, but it would be misleading to credit secularism with too much concerning Norway, there are perhaps other more important political factors (although secularism has played its part i'm sure!).

I think the point that can be taken here is that you can "take God out of everything" and still have a peaceful, productive country.

Right! The secularism probably didn't cause the "blessing." Oil did.

But the fact is that Norway is "blessed." And apparently, God has nothing to do with it.

It does show that prosperity is independent from the belief in gods. And it may even prove that freedom from dogma allows prosperity to flow unhindered by wars and other religious disgraces.

Or just look up here to Canada, where the Canadian dollar has been worth more $1 USD for a week or so...and it is expected to stay there for a few years yet.

And what are the numbers for North Korea?

Correlations does not imply causation.

"Correlations does not imply causation."

Then Christians should stop claiming that Christianity is the reason we have free democratic societies and evil atheists are the reason for the cruel despotic societies.

Norway is "the" most transparent country in the world, between its government and its citizens.

Therefore, their economy is more efficient and a sense of community is established. With a strong/stable economy, the need for economic based religion is reduced.

Norway ranks 9, in government to citizen transparency, and the USA ranks 20. If one did a search for poorest states and cities in the USA, they would likely find an increase in the number of churches in economically challenged areas.

If one were to whittle away the many reasons people attend church, "besides" actually accepting the certainty of a religious proposition..., I think there would be far fewer religiously affiliated people.

Okay, Norway was at one time, it is now number 9, up from number 8 of last year’s stats.

Ahh... that doth please me greatly.

I wonder how Japan is doing?

North-Korea is no compare: they have a state religion which is violently enforced.

Norway prospers mainly because they have natural resources. They are mainly a welfare state, so people just do what their government says. If their government said, "Believe in God", or if it placed an emphasis on God, I'm sure most Norwegians would believe in God.

Along similar lines, America prospers because of our resources such as our ability to defend our interests in other countries (that is, our army). We have no trouble protecting oil investments or obtaining cheap goods from China because of the strength of the dollar (though it is slacking off). Once our resources go, we will probably become either an extremely religious and polarized society obeying/disobeying our God-fearing government, or we will all be secularists.
