All snark aside, I guess I should be thankful my gay brother grew up in a fundy home. He is well aware of the vicious homophobia it generates and is watchful around them (which, of course, he FUCKING shouldn't have to be!)

I am gay but did not come out till age 59. The words of a Gangster Disciple who surrendered his colors to me and of Christian gay youth who were peacefully protesting at a James Dobson gay hate rally in Seattle, convicted me that I had been lying to myself all these years and that I was indeed gay. My wife loved me enough to stay with me.
I have always had gay feelings only but honestly convinced myself that these were just "feelings" since God would not create someone a certain way and than damn what He has just created. I sure never chose to be gay and did all the Bible and church said to get rid of my "devilish" feelings.
Since I came out I have been allowed to prevent several gay youth, most of whom are Christians, from committing suicide. One was only 12.
I have written about the damning nature of the abuse that religion places upon gays "in the name of love and saving their soul".
Two Christians said that if it were legal they would stone me and all my gay youth to death.
Another set of Christian parents tried to make their 15 year old gay son straight by sending him to two Reparative Therapy Camps. This boy could not stand the abuse and rejection and so he tried to hang himself and later slit his throat.
Another mom told her gay son of 15, after he came out to her, "I hope you go to prison and get raped".
Another gay youth lay under his sheets at night for two weeks with his dad's shotgun pointed in his mouth because his best friend betrayed him and told his school that he was gay. Hw was beat up, head stuck in toilet etc. The only reason he did not pull the trigger was because he did not want his mom to find his body in bloody sheets. Another happy-go-lucky youth of 13 accidentally came out to his parents [they had told him that a 13 year old could have no serious problems]. Hearing that this youth said, "Oh yes I do, I'm gay".
This boy is a Christian whose dad is a fundamental pastor. Today this youth is depressed, on anti-depressants, and told me that for the first time in his life he had thoughts of suicide. His dad warned me to stop communicating with his son or he'd call the FBI. He refused to listen to anything I wanted to say. It was then that his son wrote me/called me to please write back and call him. I was nervous but I figured the son's life was more important than the FBI threat and so I received his posts and phone calls and also wrote/called him back. The FBI got involved but never communicated with me. I also wrote on how I'd love the FBI to put me on trial so the nation could see the effects of homophobia.
Another Christian gay girl tried to burn herself to death; and when her brother wore an ear ring to class in the 5th grade his teacher said before his entire class, "You must be gay like your sister".
Another youth of 14 cried on my shoulder for 10 minutes at the start of 7th grade because he could not stand the taunts and bullying.
I have other stories. The above are kids I know personally and yet I can do so little because a parent has a right to raise their child as they see fit even though their homophobic religion is depressing their children and some have committed suicide.
I am a former pastor, seminary and Bible college instructor and was considered a mentor to other pastors.
I still believe in God because of the awesomeness of His creation, my desire to give thanks to Someone in the morning as I hear the birds sing or peer the universe at night, and that day in 1971 when I asked Jesus to come into my heart.
However, I believe that hell has it's roots in paganism, that the Tanach, the New Testament and the Quran have been corrupted by the hand of man for religious domination, political control and demigoddery. If you believe these books to be inerrant than God is a kidnapping murderous butcher who is responsible for ethnic cleansing, rape, plunder and child murder etc.
I believe that God loves each of us here, we will all be together someday in a place of delight, that God is secure enough to love diversity and that He experienced humanity in the person of Jesus [Hebrews 2:9,14; Hebrews 4:14-15; 1 Timothy 4:10].

And you just KNOW his lawyer is going for an insanity plea.

And Nelson, Peace to you for your work. My folks never liked me once I hit the teen years anyway, can't imagine how much worse it could have been.

FYI, in mental health (and I don't know the research on this, someone with more education may), it's common for schizophrenics to absorb religious teachings and roll with them in psychotic episodes ( "jesus came and talked to me," etc). This sounds a little more like that than a more "reasoned" "harass the homos" type of attack. If you have an untouched understanding of scripture, you might make more room for redemption. Just sayin'.

Based on what I am seeing, they can forget an insanity defense. A skilled prosecutor will use his hiding the evidence of signs that he knew what he did was wrong.

If this guy really believed he was Elijah, he would have said "I am Elijah" rather than "I believe I am Elijah"

1) If he read the bible for thousands of hours he should have realised that it is a load of crap.

2)Who has given money for the $500,000 bail?

3)He is going to get ass raped in jail.

4) the offical report says that the man was looking for gay guys because they had loads of money, to pay part of his expense for his education at a welding school.

5)the vile person's surname is mangum, change one letter, you'll know the motivation.

These homophobic murderers fail to see the irony of their situation: They kill a gay person, only to end up spending the rest of their lives living in close quarters with only other men for company.

Hell of a way to come out of the closet.
