He may follow God's law, but a pastor may have broken state law after police arrested him on a charge of misdemeanor assault.
On the Website of
Tabernacle Christian Church, Suffolk pastor
Carlton Upton Senior welcomes newcomers, writing "as family, we will embrace, nurture, and love you in such a spiritual way that God will be pleased." Now some are asking where the love was last Tuesday when the minister apparently forgot the embraces, and allegedly took a stranglehold on a church secretary.
Suffolk Police Lieutenant Debbie George says, "According to the victim, there was an argument between the two and at some point the pastor physically assaulted her by choking her."
In the criminal complaint, the secretary, Beatrix Mitchell writes, "he grabbed me by my neck and threw me on top of my desk." Court documents say Mitchell hit her head on the phone. George says, "According to the report, individuals had to attempt to pull him off of the victim."
Mitchell also writes "He was still yelling and tried to punch me, but his daughter grabbed his arm and everybody was yelling, 'Stop, stop.'"
So what possibly set off the man of the cloth? George says, "It indicates that there was some concern about the way things were being done around the church."
Today at Tabernacle, Upton's Tahoe sat in the lot while the spot for secretary remained empty. The court ordered that Upton have no contact with Mitchell. And today church members apparently wanted no contact with reporters.
The 63 year old minister's reputation is solid in Suffolk's church community. And by the size of his church building on East Washington Street, Tabernacle has obviously benefitted from his 18 years at the helm. Suffolk resident Olivia Rainey says, "I have friends that go. I have family members that go to that church. And what do they say? He's a good pastor. I have not heard anybody say anything bad about him."
Upton has a court hearing June 25th. He is out on $1500 bond.

Guys like John Loftus who, by their won admission lied to their congregations, wives, and friends, got caught fooling around, and decided to go the "ex christian" evangelism route, which, as Dan Barker has shown, can be quite profitable.
So, I am not saying you all are lying, I just "lack belief" in your claims.
What?
i'm not sure why you'd think that - the bible allows what he did. I guess you didn't read it?
Yep.............. he's a gawdly man.
blair in kc ------- what the hell are you talking about? You smoke some crack before you commented? But just for kicks I'll add.......... if anyone says that they are a christian...... then they are! Just because they screw up now and again, and again, and again, and again, does not mean they are not what they claim to be! By the same judgmental attitude you suggest, I suppose you are not a christian either. So shut the hell up!

I happen to be a member of the foundation that Dan Barker and his wife, Annie Laurie Gaylor, run. This year they released their foundations funding and expenses record and "proudly" announced that they were able to give themselves pay raises. For all their formal educations and my lack of it, I still make more than they do. So where does this profitability come from? They don't live in a multimillion dollar home with servants, personal guards and private jets.
You need to get a flippin clue before you start passing off libel as fact!
Evil is evil, crime is crime, and these churches only have to look in the mirror to see the true face of the devil.
I remember a story about 2 years ago in Oklahoma or the midwest, a Christian chruch counselor was leading a dodge ball game for the high school church group. The adult counselor was in the center and a 15-year old boy hit his head. The counselor snapped and kicked the boy hard in the groin. The boy was in pain and when he urinated, he was bleeding.
The counselor was convicted of felony charges of assult on a minor.
Christian values.
