New judge sought in youth leader sex case

A hearing on a request for a new judge is set for Friday for a female former church youth group leader accused of having sex with a 15-year-old male group member.

Angela Hurt, 32, who was a part-time youth leader at Cornerstone Church in Springfield, was charged in November in Greene County Circuit Court with second-degree statutory rape and second-degree statutory sodomy for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with the boy from January to March 2005.

A probable cause statement filed on Sept. 1, 2006, says police learned about the relationship after finding Hurt and the victim engaged in sexual activity in Maple Park Cemetery. The boy later said, according to the statement, that the two had been having sex since January or February 2005, often at Hurt's home in Springfield.

Hurt's trial is scheduled for July, but could be delayed if she is granted a change of judge. Her motion for the change does not state a reason.

The victim and his family have also filed a civil lawsuit against Hurt, Cornerstone Church, its pastor and other members of the church staff including Hurt's husband, Robert.

Jeff Gorman, associate pastor at Cornerstone, said he is confident the church will be vindicated if the suit reaches a jury. He also stressed that Hurt was a youth leader and not a youth pastor.

"Cornerstone Church had no knowledge of any illegal activities of a former youth leader, nor does it condone any of the allegations against the former employee. Any claim that Cornerstone Church was negligent in any way is without merit," Gorman read from a written statement by the church's attorney, Dee Wampler.

I guess that makes it okay, then. =/

One more sex scandel that proves there is no "power of god" to keep people from having sex.

The boy was 15. I know she was much older but I think a 15 year old knows what he is doing.

Maybe it was a new retention strategy. It would have worked for me at 15... Heck, it might make church tolerable even now...

Seriously, the church trying to distance themselves only calls into question their "discernment" in utilizing pedofiles. The church never can seem to spot one until they are performing oral sex on someone.

As an aside - Nvrgoingbk - I point this out because of what I said about Youth Pastors in the "Post-Modern" thread. Go to the church website and check out their staff page. The picture of the Youth guy almost made me fall out of my chair. Talk about someone needing some validation...

Spoomonkey,...great point! What great press to advertize the church
and it's website.

Lonely and forgiving xtians won't hold the pastor accountable, and the church may even grow because of this "scandel".

This is where I live and it is as one puts it, "the buckle of the bible belt." There is a church on every corner and everyone is a christian. All except a few of us. BTW this hasn't made it to the front page yet. Around here stuff like this is a side note due to not offending christians. It is extremely sad and kinda ironic how our "moral" leaders are involved in this. Although being a pastors kid and youth sponsor is likened to a god for these kids and even god can't stop perverts from preying on these kids emotions.

Damn it, Janet.

It must be stuff like this that makes the xtians wonder how non-religious people can behave morally.

I mean, if they (the xtians) have so much trouble with morality even with their marvelous book of rules from their omnipotent and omniscient supernatural sky daddy, then anyone without it must really be screwed, I guess!

Faulty logic, of course, but I can see (kind of) how the bible-less would scare the shite out of 'em...

Only five percent of those who look to Alcoholics Anonymous stay sober the rest of their lives. That's an incredible failure rate.
The church has probably about the same failure rate.

Those who quit a dangerous or illegal habit "DO IT ON THER OWN"!

These articles on clergy pedo's are very important because they expose the myth that god delivers and saves.*Keep up the good work Dave.

So what.

Are you implying that the affair was okay somehow? If the gender roles were reversed would that make it just as okay?

She knew what she was doing. She knew it was wrong. She did it anyway. It was her fault. Not his.

This guy doesnt represent all christians. We need to stop with the nonsense in the church, but this isnt how christ should be represented. I'm sure there is someone in here that went to a good church when they were a christian where pastors and staff didnt do that. Someone speak up, I know yall in here.

That would be me. I never attended a church where I was likely to be raped physically.....

....but they sure screwed me out of my money!

I have known the pastor at this church for a long time and he would never allow something like this. To say that he knew and did nothing is beyond ridiculous. You guys shouldn't jump to conclusions.
