I had a three way discussion between cartoonists about what to do with Jerry Falwell. After much debate, mostly with myself, I decided I was going to put him arriving in hell instead of heaven. The irony was just too tempting.
Falwell for all his preaching about love and forgiveness, he himself practiced hate and intolerance. He has hurt many people in his life, he has done more damage than good and he has done this under the guise of doing what's "moral."
I really don't think Falwell will find himself in hell. The God Falwell preached about was far more forgiving than that. Some cartoonists have already made the point that Falwell's God was far more forgiving than Falwell himself.
But, to me, it is not off the mark to depict Jerry Falwell arriving in hell, at least in a cartoon. Especially the way it was drawn. It's not exactly Dante's Infernal. It's a cartoon hell with a cartoon character as the main element. To me it's so over the top that I didn't think people would take it that serious. It's just a joke.
But my opinion is not shared by everyone. Especially some readers at the Daily News.
I was informed by my editor when I arrived at work on the day that it appeared that Pastor Perry F. Rockwood was pulling all his ads from the Daily News. Not only this, but he wrote a diatribe against me for the next day's letters. There's another letter going to Friday's paper and I had correspondence with a few other people who took exception with the depiction. So I decided to put it up on my blog for discussion. Surprisingly, more people liked it than took offense. At least so far. It's still up for debate.
The letter from the angry preacher is below.
To the Editor:
As a 90 year-old Christian and preacher, I am very disappointed in your Editorial Cartoon regarding Jerry Falwell.
Jerry Falwell was a Bible Christian, a Bible preacher and a respected leader for those who believe in the Bible. What is wrong with that? I know his stand on homosexuality was not popular but it was a Bible stand. God's Word teaches that homosexuality is a sin. The same-sex marriage law is an abomination. The whole scene reeks with the stench of Sodom. Whoever it is, wherever and whenever it is, it has no place in Christian circles or in any decent human society.
Same-sex marriage is a perversion of sex. There is no stretch of anybody, circumstances that gets homosexuality properly defined as normal . It is the opposite of normal. It is the antithesis of right and the companion of evils. It is an attack on the family. You check biblically there's no place given to homosexuality as a foundation for families. It has not been the standard for families in any nation in history.
It is a mockery of marriage. The Bible says: "And He answered and said onto them, Have ye not read, that He which made them at the beginning made them male and female. And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and they shall be one flesh" (Matthew 19:4,5).
Jerry Falwell would not insist that everyone believe the Bible. He did preach that the Lord created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve, not Edie and Eve. He preached that marriage was designed for a man and a woman. That has been the pattern for human society for the past 6000 years. To even ponder the possibility of same-gender couple in a husband-wife relationship is a mockery of marriage.
The legacy of Jerry Falwell is that he was a preacher of the Bible. No one is forced to believe what the Bible teaches. But in our society we still have the freedom to preach exactly what the Bible says.
It was not long ago you made an Editorial statement that you had plans to increase the circulation of your paper. There are still many thousands of Bible believers in the HRM area who believe the Bible. This Editorial Cartoon against Jerry Falwell will not be well received by any of them.Pastor Perry F. Rockwood

I'm sick of this distortion that is continually repeated over and over. Did these morons ever read their precious bible? Their bible is full of references to male characters and their WIVES. The biblical definition of marriage is between a man and one or more women, not between a man and a singular woman!
End by threatening the livelihood of people who publish information that challenges public perception. Priceless. The xian goal -- don't let your idea compete. Make it the only one people get to hear.
I feel like I'm still to angry with the tactics the bullshit mongers use in the church and community to make a rational argument. But the picture of Falwell surprised by his hereafter experience rings true with me. I'm angry and sad that the religious communities consider hate normal but love between two people, gender aside, to be abhorrent.
Anybody know the way back to the other side of the looking glass?
Why do they always just focus on what the OT says about homosexuality? Why don't they sell their daughters into slavery as it says in Exodus:
When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again. But he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners, since he is the one who broke the contract with her. And if the slave girl's owner arranges for her to marry his son, he may no longer treat her as a slave girl, but he must treat her as his daughter. If he himself marries her and then takes another wife, he may not reduce her food or clothing or fail to sleep with her as his wife. If he fails in any of these three ways, she may leave as a free woman without making any payment. (Exodus 21:7-11 NLT)
From Chucky Jesus
And Dante got the same flak when he wrote Inferno. Dante, however, didn't wait until they were dead; he placed several popes who were currently ALIVE in hell.
They weren't very happy about that, as you can imagine.
Falwell struck me as one of those "once saved, always saved" types...once you've accepted christ, it doesn't matter what you do--you've got a one-way ticket to heaven.
Makes it a lot easier to spew hatred and encourage intolerance against those with a different opinion. After all, we all know that destroying the "enemies of god," whomever you decide they may be, is gooooood, mmmm-kaaay?
Sorry for this rant, but I just have a problem with preachers who put themselves in the public eye as Falwell, Jackson, and Sharpton. They foment division, intolerance, and hate, and make a hell of a lot of money doing it, under the guise of "doing the lord's work."
Lord's work, my ass. The only religious people in the bible who acted like this were the Pharisees, and we know what happened to them.
(/rant)
I was going to make a point, then noticed that r. black beat me to the punch. That letter was just a diatribe against homosexuals and barely even mentioned Falwell.
a standard xian tactic. distract the people with emotional argument. *yawn*
He's another one of these guys who has a fulltime distaste for the "purpose driven church" movement, whatever that is. Major comic relief, at no cost, on your radio dial, to start your day on.
I was born intersexed, part male, part female. Raised as a female (cause it's easier to snip away than to live with small parts?) and in my thirties changed my gender. Legally and medically and all.
Yeah, some pastor told me that I could never date anyone, cause if I date a woman, that would be homosexual. So I suggested that maybe I should date a man? He said no, that would be homosexual. As a last reserve, I suggested I may date a woman who had a sex change before, because that would make us the perfect straight couple? Nope, he said, that would be homosexual.
Well, in that sense, I'll be your intersexed, transsexual, formerly lesbian, homosexual-but-women-dating-straight-man, and happy atheist.
You christians....you don't even know what you're talking about, half of the time. Who are you to judge?
