News of interest to former Christians

A Bexar County, Texas, jury this morning convicted a former youth minister of capital murder in the deaths of his 17-year-old pregnant girlfriend and their unborn child.

Jurors in the 226th District Court took about an hour and 15 minutes to find Adrian Estrada, 24, guilty of capital murder in the Dec. 12, 2005, choking and stabbing death of Stephanie Sanchez.

Estrada, a former youth pastor at El Sendero Assembly of God church, showed no emotion when the verdict was read.

He faces either the death penalty or life in prison without parole. The punishment phase of his trial is set to begin Tuesday.

Sanchez's body was found on the kitchen floor of her family's West Side home. She was about three months pregnant at the time of her death, and DNA evidence showed Estrada was the father. Estrada was arrested the following day after he admitted to stabbing the teen.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys this morning presented their closing arguments.

In her closing statements, prosecutor Kirsta Melton told jurors that immediately after the slayings, the defendant went to exercise at a local gym and then went to Wal-Mart. "The man was picking out clothes while his girlfriend and his child bled to death on the kitchen floor," Melton said.

"Two lives, two futures, destroyed by one man -- Adrian Estrada," Melton said.

The prosecution asked that jurors find him guilty of capital murder for both deaths. The defense asked that jurors consider lesser charges of murder in Sanchez' death and manslaughter in the death of the fetus.

Defense attorney Suzanne Kramer argued there was no evidence that Estrada went to the home with the intent to kill anyone or that he had a weapon when he arrived at the house.

Kramer said there is evidence, however, that an altercation occurred inside the home, and it's possible that Sanchez came at him with a knife until Estrada took it away.

"We will not argue (the killing) was in self-defense," Kramer told jurors. "I think it will insult your intelligence. I think it's obvious whatever happened was emotions gone awry."

Is it just me....or has anyone else noticed how many of these murderers convicted over the years have had ties to the mainstream church? I've read shit loads of cases over at crimelibrary.com that have these murdering bastards slaughtering their families or other people's family members with absolutly no show of remorse whatsoever. And, most of them claim to be christians. Why? Do they think that just because they ascribe to this load of shit that it makes murder ok to do because they are christians? It makes them no better than the filthy muzzies who murder the women in their lives, and their own daughters for insulting their "honor", or some bullshit excuse like that in my opinion. I hope this bastard fries.

Well, you know, she probably wasn't submissive enough, she had it coming to her. And she had the nerve to get pregnant. Christianity breeds violent men, they are taught that they get to have their way because they are the head of woman as god is the head of the church. God's vindictive, he's the role model, there you go. It's frightening and vicious, but it's not a surprise.

I agree,Lynn, than xianity, and other patriarcal type belief systems DO breed violent men. I dealt with a violent crispie boyfriend some years ago that was always spouting that women had to submit to the man's wishes because "god" gave the men dominance over women. Then he proceeded to ass rape me, and force me to perform oral sex on him. The piece of shit went to jail too...but not after I'd bit his filthy cock good and hard. Mwahahahaha! That little performance got me a hell of a black eye...but he never came back to my house again either...even after he got out of jail. I have since been happily married to a WONDERFUL man for almost 11 years now...and he is of the opinion that this world would probably be a better place if it was a lot more matriarchal...and that all these filthy bastards who think it makes them more "manly" to beat and abuse women should be castrated so they can't breed. (GAWDS! I LOVE this guy!)

Now now people, you know it's US gays who are the bad seed of this world. (smirk)---if it weren't for us gays, then these murdering fundies wouldn't have anyone else to blame for their downfall in society. I'd long said everyone on death row claims to be Christian!

I knew Adrian Estrada personally...Yes I am a christian. After this incident I went back to the world and I see you're confusion. I am a Psych major with the word of God in my heart. My faith helped me and I knew Stephanie "Sanwich" Sanchez but God helped me overcome this trial. I come before you with the word and emphasize on your faith or judge you.Romans 2-5....God bless!
