Ted Haggard, founder and former senior pastor of New Life Church, plans to leave Colorado Springs and move to Iowa or Missouri to return to college, according to a message he e-mailed Sunday to some church members.
Haggard’s family has been “offered two places” in the Midwestern states, Haggard wrote. He and his wife, Gayle, will go back to school together, but Haggard didn’t specify what college or university they would attend.
“We are both planning on getting our masters in Psychology so we can work together serving others the rest of our lives,” Haggard wrote.
The nationally known minister was dismissed
from the pulpit in the wake of a sex and drug scandal that rocked the evangelical movement.
On Nov. 1, Denver escort Mike Jones said he and Haggard had a three-year tryst and that he watched Haggard take methamphetamine.
Haggard initially denied the allegations, but he resigned as president of the National Association of Evangel- icals on Nov. 2. Church officials then confirmed some of the allegations were true.
Haggard told members of the media that he purchased meth from Jones but never used it.
Rob Brendle, associate pastor at the 14,000-member New Life Church, said Sunday night that Haggard and the Board of Overseers — a fourmember board of outside pastors that dismissed Haggard from the pulpit — had discussed Haggard’s future for several weeks.
Brendle was unsure whether the e-mail was sent at Haggard’s initiative or was suggested by the overseers.
“I’m grateful for an arrangement that will enable Ted to focus on his spiritual and emotional restoration, and one that enables New Life Church to focus on this season of transition,” Brendle said. “It seems like a win-win.”
In his e-mail, Haggard said he had undergone three weeks of intense psychological counseling in Phoenix.
“We all wanted to know why I developed such incongruity in my life,” he wrote. “Thankfully, with the tools we gained there, along with the powerful way God has been illuminating His Word and the Holy Spirit has been convicting and healing me, we now have growing understanding which is giving me some hope for a future.”
Haggard said he hasn’t communicated with church members lately because he’s been “paralyzed by shame.”
“But as God and people like you forgive me, the sun is starting to rise in my life,” Haggard wrote. “I look forward to communicating with greater ease.”
Ted Haggard email to New Life ChurchHere is the text of the e-mail Ted Haggard sent to some members of New Life Church:
Jesus is starting to put me back together. I have spent so much time in repentance, brokenness, hurt and sorrow for the things I’ve done and the negative impact my actions have had on others. That sadness continues as my family and I, along with so many others, go through the painful consequences of my actions. Jesus and his followers, though, have saved my life. As part of New Life’s efforts to help me, they sent Gayle and me to Phoenix for a three-week psychological intensive that gave us three years worth of analysis and treatment. We all wanted to know why I developed such incongruity in my life. Thankfully, with the tools we gained there, along with the powerful way God has been illuminating His Word and the Holy Spirit has been convicting and healing me, we now have growing understanding which is giving me some hope for a future.
Gayle and I have decided to move from Colorado Springs to go back to school. We love Colorado Springs so much, and will always regard the believers at New Life Church as family, but we have to go in order to let the church determine its own course and for us to retrain. We haven't decided where we are moving but so far have been offered two places, one in Iowa and one in Missouri. We are both planning on getting our masters in Psychology so we can work together serving others the rest of our lives. Since we are taking our classes on-line, we can live anywhere that’s affordable. Then we’ll travel to location for short in-class requirements.
Thank you so much for your love and prayers during this horrific time of transition in our lives. For the last three months, I’ve not been communicative because I’ve been paralyzed by shame. But as God and people like you forgive me, the sun is starting to rise in my life. I look forward to communicating with greater ease.
God bless,
Ted Haggard

I have spent so much time in repentance, brokenness, hurt and sorrow for the things I’ve done...
The sad thing is he is really gay (at least bi-sexual) and is going to suffer all his life because of it.
When I heard about this I thought it was hilarious, another hypocrite caught. But when I thought about it my compassion took over. He obviously likes a bit of **** and that is causing him great pain.
If you can't stop being gay then stop being a Christian.

I wish you were correct, but I'll wager that his Psychology education will be at a Christobot university, probably some diploma mill. Once he has his "papers", he then goes into counciling ex-gay types. A denier helping others deny. It's a win win for him. Can't say the same for his wife, as eventually he will "stumble".
If that's not a miracle, I don't know what is!
hally-LOO-ya! lol.
He now labels himself as an ex ex-gay. Maybe Teddy will attain that label eventually.
Greed can be such an incredible motivator.
Ted is a good man - I hope that God has truly heard his prayer and healed him of his affliction. If by chance God has not heard his prayer and he indicates that God has done so - he will do more harm to himself, his family, and the church he serves. I will be praying for him.
Wow! I love the contortions Christians get into about prayer, despite the "whatever you shall ask of the Father you shall receive" promise. Now they have to worry about the chance gawd won't hear it because, I don't know, he's busy, asleep, somewhere else...
Ted will indeed be fortunate to be healed from the affliction of... his erroneous beliefs, cause he is clearly in denial.
McChurch, the drive-through, fast-food temple of the Christian Right, has produced another 90-day wonder.
I have done some work with divorce within the Evangelical movement, particlulary focusing on the addictive nature of denial. Evangelicals now enjoy a slightly greater divorce rate than the general public. Denial can be a wonderful thing in the ghetto!
At least the recovery group got him out of town and out of mind...

As a homosexual, I am continously offended by Haggards unrealistic salvation! He get's "Offered" things such as salaries and education from right-wing bigots he supports; however, gay teens get the boot and the streets. Haggard isn't fooling anyone I know, only himself. I highly doubt he will ever find anything other than the HATRED he has for himself and everyone else.
I keep waiting for someone to preach to me about being queer. I am deep into sin and loving every minute. You would think I would be fundy bait.
Have a nice morning, sweetie. And to all here, xian or non xian, teddy is as phoney as a 3 dollar bill. If you are gay or lesbian, that does not change. never.
Leviticus:
20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.
You wrote: “…behave in a manner becoming of Christian beliefs…”
Wow, Danny, the subject of “Christian Behavior”! Are your standards for this behavior Biblically based? If so, then all manner of atrocities are commanded or allowed, but, you are right, being Gay is NOT one of them! And if you are Gay, the Bible says you must die! So, I assume there is a large contingent of “True Christians, Jews and Muslims” pressing for the death penalty for Pastor Ted’s infraction as this would be Proper and Just behavior, right?
BTW: Why do you allow the possibility that God may NOT HEAR Ted’s Prayer? The Bible says, that if we ask ANYTHING believing that we will receive it, it will be done for us! And if we confess our sins, God will forgive us. Do you think this is the FIRST time Ted has confessed this “sin” and prayed or cried out to God to “please, please take this “sin” from me”? Absolutely not! Ted, himself, says that he has been struggling with Homo tendencies all of his life!
I, like you, think that Ted is a good man and, despite his hypocrisy, I now feel compassion for him. “God” made him Gay or “confused”, so who I’m I to judge him for this “Behavior”? But how cruel it seems of the Biblical God to let Ted down when all he was trying to do was “God’s Bidding”. I can’t image the gut wrecking anguish that Ted has gone through with this and then having to Preach against his very core truths. The “mind-games” must have been horrendous and are likely not over.
I guess this is just a “Mystery” but still part of “God’s Plan” for poor Ted and since God is in control, it must be ok, Right?
