News of interest to former Christians

You are a young documentary filmmaker with a reputation for capturing politicians' antics. In a deliberate departure from politics, your latest film is a road trip into the world of evangelical Christians that includes a drive-through church, a Christian wrestling federation, a stand-up Christian comic, an evangelical Elvis and a biblical miniature golf course complete with the empty tomb of Jesus.

It just so happens, though, that your designated tour guide in that world is the Rev. Ted Haggard, then president of the National Association of Evangelicals who, after your film is finished, is accused of buying illegal drugs from a male prostitute and paying him for sex. And your mother, it turns out, makes history by becoming the first female speaker of the House just weeks before your film is broadcast.

Those two big events are the back story for Alexandra Pelosi, whose film "Friends of God: A Road Trip With Alexandra Pelosi,'' is to be shown on HBO on Thursday, Jan. 25. The youngest child of Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the California Democrat sworn in earlier this month as speaker of the House, Alexandra Pelosi said the other day she worried that her film would not be received in an "open-minded way.''

People might love it or hate because of her mother or because of its association with Haggard, she said. But what she really wanted, Pelosi said, was to further the conversation about religion and culture.

"I believe in the culture war,'' she said. "And you know what? If I have to take a side in the culture war I'll take their side,'' meaning the Christian conservatives. "Because if you give me the choice of Paris Hilton or Jesus, I'll take Jesus.''

Pelosi wrote, directed and produced "Friends of God,'' which took her through 16 states and the District of Columbia with a small, hand-held camera. It is offered as a series of snapshots, she said, with a focus on conservative evangelicals, including the ministers Jerry Falwell and Joel Osteen. In the film, Haggard explains the allure of evangelical Christianity and extols the primacy of sex among evangelicals.

"I unfortunately chose the wrong leading man,'' Pelosi said of Haggard, whom she picked for his credibility. She liked him, she said, and they spent a great deal of time together.

"Pastor Ted was my tour guide,'' she said. "When I met him he was so reasonable and open, and he took me camping at Pikes Peak. He taught me how to shoot a gun at the top of Pikes Peak. I thought he was the most reasonable man I had met on the road.''

After his fall, Pelosi scurried back to the editing room, saddened.

"We had to take some stuff out,'' she said. "But you can't do an entire movie without the failed guy.''

Pelosi, 36, is best known for her films "Journeys With George'' (about George W. Bush) and "Diary of a Political Tourist'' (about Democratic presidential candidates).

"I would like to think that evangelicals would love this movie,'' she said, adding that she tried hard to make them look their best. "But a lot of them won't even watch it because they don't want to watch my mom's daughter's movie.''

The Rev. Leith Anderson, who replaced Haggard as president of the National Association of Evangelicals, said he expected that evangelical Christians would decide to watch "Friends of God'' for the same reasons as other viewers: buzz and reviews.

"I hope more and more Americans realize there is a broad diversity of evangelicals, a diversity in race, politics and denominations,'' said Anderson, the senior pastor of the Wooddale Church in

Eden Prairie, Minn. "If that comes across in the documentary that's really good.''

"Friends of God'' opens with an on-screen declaration that the documentary (which Pelosi began shooting on her honeymoon in June 2005) was completed before Haggard's scandal.

Pelosi said she thought many viewers might want to sneak a peek at Haggard, the founder and former senior pastor of the New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colo.

"You know, all the surveys say that evangelicals have the best sex life of any other group,'' Haggard says slyly to the camera, to which the effusive Pelosi responds, "No way.'' Haggard then asks a parishioner at his 14,000-member church how often he has sex with his wife. The man says: "Every day. Twice a day.''

Days before the Democrats captured the House and Senate, Haggard was dismissed by his church's board of overseers for "sexually immoral conduct.'' A male prostitute in Denver had said in a radio interview that Haggard had been a monthly customer and buyer of methamphetamines. Haggard responded that not all the accusations were true. But he stated in a letter read in his church that "enough of them are true that I have been appropriately and lovingly removed from ministry.''

Did Pelosi have any inkling that Haggard was not as-advertised?

"I did,'' she said. "People flock to the church for a reason. Some people flock to the church for a reason. It seemed like there was some reason he was so drawn to me. There was something in him. I mean, if he was a true red-state evangelical, we wouldn't have sort of clicked.'' And he never gay-bashed, she said.

But Pelosi said the film's point was that the evangelical Christian movement was big -- bigger than any one pastor.

"Depending on whom you ask, there could be between 50 and 80 million evangelical Christians in America,'' Pelosi says in "Friends.''

On the road, she said, she was repeatedly asked about her own beliefs. "I got saved five times a day,'' she said, describing herself as a believer in God and a lapsed Roman Catholic who dislikes church. But she and her husband, Michiel Vos, a journalist for Dutch media, intend to make certain that their son, Paul Michael Vos (born Nov. 13), goes to church, she said, so he would have "more than himself and capitalism to believe in.''

As a first-time mother, a fairly new wife and the sister of four siblings, Pelosi clearly has her own take on so-called family values. But at least one Pelosi never sees any of her work in advance but is invited to screenings like everyone else, she said.

"The last thing I need is her editing my film,'' Pelosi said cheerfully, talking about her mother. "She'll be subtle, the same way she comes to my house and says I need to drop one of the baby's feedings. You don't get to be speaker of the House by being subtle.''

The article contained:
"...After his fall, Pelosi scurried back to the editing room, saddened..."

Thus her comfort level with the New Testament as it has come down to us.

BTW, imagine the false-dichotomy of having only jebus and Paris Hilton to choose between; enough to make me rethink my ideas of Hell...

i agree with eel shepherd - why should the only given choices be between a myth created personage and a media created personage, with nothing in between ?
somehow this sort of misperception and type of addled thinking, so prevalent in our society, has to be overcome.

How about neither of the above? There are so many, many, many more humans in the world!

Should be an interesting movie, despite its apparent intention as simple-minded evangelical propaganda.

I agree that the choice between Paris Hilton and Jesus is a false dilemma, but IF I had to choose between the two (and really we're not talking about the real Jesus as a choice [if he existed], but instead his followers), I'd take Hilton, because at least Hilton is more open and honest about her sexual proclivities than the Jesus followers.

If forced to choose between a night with Paris Hilton or Jesus, I think we know which Mr. Haggard would choose... ;)

Very interesting. I wish I had HBO so I could see this telecast.

What I can say for certain is that Jesus loves both Paris Hilton and Ted Haggard.

Now as far as Nanci Pelosi who stands against everything pro-life, me thinks that it certainly is not "simple-minded evangelical propaganda," contrary to what chris said.

I can see that at least anonymous 1:55PM seems to be open minded enough to consider that there is a real Jesus.

This ought to evoke comment.

Hoeppner, you canīt actually say for certain that Jesus loves Ted and Paris (and my heavens, what a pair... there is a reality show there. One a gay evangelist hypocrite son of a bitch, the other a decadent, semi-retarded blonde brat - Roommates in Hell!)
...

You can say that you BELIEVE Jesus loves them. You are NOT free to make the statement that you know it, because you donīt, and it would be a lie.

And is it me, or is Alex Pelosi full of shit? The guy she shot the thing with turns out to be a fake, promptly she edits her flick. COWARD!

I just found the ExChristian.Net, and I am a Christian. I may not agree with all that is said here but I do know Faith and Belief is a part of each ones heart, mind, or soul.

People may try to club you with Truth, but each person picks and chooses his or her own path and their own beliefs, I just ask each to explore and make up your own mind for yourself, not because of something a person or Pastor or Professor told you, or Dave.

You do the research yourself about God or no God, Jesus is Lord or Jesus is Man, Islam, Koran, Juddism, and any other religion or non-religion.

And if you decide to follow one follow it with your full heart, and not just a half heart.

I agree completely.

Let me know how actually doing that works out for you, huni.

A lapsed Catholic who dislikes church but who is going to make sure her kid goes to church. Hmm. Okay. Uh...what?

I encourage everyone to check out the International House of Prayer, based in Kansas City. There is a real God and he loves every one of us even if we don't believe in him or love him back. He only wants the best for us. Also check out Bound4Life. Check out their websites. If your so happy with your life, then why do you keep running to broken sisterns? there is an eternal joy that God wants to share with us.

Hi Anony!

I have plenty of joy in my life already! Thanks for the offer, but no thanks. I don't need any more religious bologna. I'm glad that the imaginary world of angels, gods and demons makes you happy, though.

Sincerely.

The Church is asleep and WE need to wake up. we need to listen to God, give all of ourselves and love Him back. The Church is so blind to everything that is going on around them. WE think that if we just say we believe in God then we are ok even if we are living a life of sin. How can God show us he is real if we don't give him everything when we said we would? He has already given us everything(Jesus), it is OUR TURN to give him back every part of our life. HE is GOOD. HE IS FAITHFUL.

Anonymous: "He is good. He is faithful."

Um, no. Read your Bible again till you get it through your head that the Biblical god is a sadistic prick that gives gods a bad name.

A drowned planet, the genocide of the Amakelites, the torture of Job (on a bet between Yahweh and Satan, no less), the sanctioning of slavery, the sadism of Hell... This is not a being worthy of anyone's worship.

I can totally understand why many of you would turn from Religion and Churches. I would be willing to bet that the honest in this forum came generally from either strict catholic rules for life religiosity, srict overbearing southern baptist hypocritical and forceful churches, or from a family that taught you religion was a hoax for the weak. For that, I am sorry, but please let me add that I am not one for "religion." I came to a cross roads in my life where I had to get off of the fence and explore my options. Many of you would probably doubt that I did trully explore my options... but i did. Some would say we are creatures of biological mishap, but I had to decide on creation, because no one could answer me, how to it all began (everything logically has to come from something). As for religions, some said I would have to do a bunch of sacraments to even hope to achieve eternal life, some have a set path to salvation, but one was different . One focused itself on loving others, provided actally practical ways of living, and most importantly, it told me that because God loved me, he created a way for us all to be together. Not of anything I had to do at all, but just by His grace. I had to explore and explore to find who or what to put my faith in, but when i put my faith in Jesus, the Son of God, coming to Die for my sins, and rising again, things changed. I don't have to do anything, but actions i do take, I take because I love Him. Does this make me a fool? I reasoned openmindedley, i searched, I examined my life (for you philosophers) and I came to a conclusion (with help). How could a reasonable, liberally tolerant person scald me or call my ignorant for that. It is not about religion, rules, how good you live your life, and any christian religious person who leads you in that direction is mistaken on what scripture says. All we do is believe on Him. The bible says to share faith in love, for those who havn't, and those here whom i know have been hurt by those who are forceful and hurtful I Am Sorry -- but know that there are others out there not like them.
As for Haggard, no christian ever has claimed perfection, thats why we preach forgiveness. I don't know him or his heart, but neither do you.

Thanks for a great documentary. The fish angle lens was a bit much though, looking up their nostrils. I never watched Ted Haggard or Jerry Falwell before but I really liked them. I predict a comeback for Ted Haggard that will surpass his former ministry. He's very real and human. I wish now you hadn't edited him out. I know many people who were converted by him and there'll be many more now because he fell and then he overcame. I especially love the BattleCry segment with the teenagers turning on the MTV culture (now there's an oxymoron). Please do a documentary on Christian rock/punk/rap worship bands and that Christian wrestling thing. Practical Christianity - it's about time!

Astreja,

First I'd like to say that God shows us in the Bible that he loves human beings very much. If He didn't love us, he wouldn't have willingly died for us.

In John 3:16, Jesus says "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

I strongly disagree with your interpretations of the Biblical stories that you listed, but no amount of debating can change a person's heart. I challenge you to take the words of the Bible to heart to see how much God loves you.

Greg,I do not believe that the Bible (or any other "holy book" currently in circulation) reflects the words of an actual god. Even if it does, I choose to not worship the god of the Bible because I find its conduct disgusting and unconscionable.

"First I'd like to say that God shows us in the Bible that he loves human beings very much. If He didn't love us, he wouldn't have willingly died for us."

This is laughable. Not only do you believe the Bible to be an accurate account of some invisible, intangible and undetectable super-being... You also believe that this same being, who allegedly drowned virtually all life on this planet is capable of love?

I have a much simpler job description for a loving god: No flood, no Original Sin, no hell, no crucifixion, no apocalypse.

And, even if it actually happened (and, honestly, I don't think it did), "dying for us" makes no sense at all. Your purported god is omnipotent, right? So why does it need some elaborate and thoroughly ghastly blood sacrifice in order to forgive less-powerful beings of a crime that it, itself claims we committed? Does. Not. Compute.

"In John 3:16..."

Cut! I fucking despise John 3:16. To paraphrase Arthur Dent, "Ah. This is obviously some strange new definition of 'love' that I wasn't previously aware of."

And, in My opinion, anyone who willingly accepts the supposed sacrifice of Jesus is morally bankrupt. Allowing someone else to take the rap for you is dishonourable.

"I challenge you to take the words of the Bible to heart to see how much God loves you."

Challenge rejected. Your pretend god(s), rejected. Your Bible, rejected. Christianity, rejected. You do realize that this site is called EX-Christian.net, don't you?
