News of interest to former Christians

The following is from Agape Press (Reliable News from a Christian Source):

WM note: All you science minds out there, please read the following, watch the video clip, and let us know what's wrong with their thinking. Have fun!

A well-known evangelist and Christian television show host is trying to equip believers to respond effectively to atheists.

In his book Intelligent Design vs. Evolution: Letters to an Atheist, Ray Comfort uses actual e-mails between himself and an atheist that took place several years ago. When the atheist inquired why Comfort did not accept "scientific facts" supporting the theory of evolution, the evangelist responded that there was more proof that the world is flat. That interchange eventually led to Comfort's writing of the book.

Comfort contends that many Christians do not know how to respond to atheists' questions about intelligent design, or ID. The evangelist maintains that God's Word can be defended scientifically, historically, and logically.

"When it comes down to it, there are no scientific arguments for evolution," he points out. "Evolutionists use a specific language -- it's called the language of speculation ...."

And when using that language, Comfort contends that evolutionists use phrases such as "Well, we believe," and terms such as "perhaps," "maybe," "could have," and "possibly."

"They continually use [that phraseology] because there's no basis for what they're saying," says the host of the program The Way of the Master. "It's all conjecture."

But when it comes to creation, Comfort explains, there is what he describes as "absolute, hard, scientific, empirical evidence." In fact, Comfort claims to be able to prove God's existence scientifically in two minutes -- without the use of "faith."

Christians' response to naysayers, he suggests, is first to explain that the word "science" simply means "knowledge." Then, he says, engage them with the following: "Let me give you knowledge of a Creator. To have a building, you must have a builder. To have a painting, you must have a painter. Buildings don't happen without a builder; paintings don't happen without a painter. Creation cannot happen without a Creator."

Comfort's co-host on The Way of the Master is Christian actor and speaker Kirk Cameron. His book Intelligent Design vs. Evolution -- as well as a board game based on the book -- is available through the Internet at WayoftheMaster.com. Ken Ham of Answers in Genesis recommends the board game for families, saying it will help them to become better equipped to "defend our precious Christian faith."

Ray Comfort already admitted the "Banana Argument" is faulty when he was on the Hellbound Alleee show a while back. In response the the whole idea that evolution is nothing but "speculation" becuase scientists use words like "we believe" and "probably" is because:
1) It an intellectually honest answer. We do not (nor can we ever) know with 100% absolute certainty exactly what happened in the past. Science serves us by analyzing the available evidence and selecting the most probable explanation.
2) Science is temporal. Part of the nature of science is that it has to have the ability to change. When you apply absolutes as the creationists do to their creationism, you end up with something dogmatic, which isn't science at all.

It's pretty funny how people bash Scientology for selling so many 'courses' and just trying to make money, and here's more proof (like any more is needed) that Xianity is much more of the offender. Look at this guy's website, thewayofthemaster.com! It's just there to bring him the bucks. Buy the intermediate course, buy the game, and donate too! If Jesus had existed, he'd be turning in his grave that he never rose from.

The very fact that believers need “help” responding to atheists indicates that believers’ backs are against the wall. Knowledge makes faith obsolete. Atheism is merely a state brought about by knowledge. Faith survives only among those who avoid knowledge. Those who avoid knowledge are merely self-selecting themselves for extinction. Creationism is not knowledge. It is a childish attempt to reword faith in scientific terms. As many have pointed out, the attempt by the faithful to use scientific terms to promote their faith constitutes a surrender to science. The battle between faith and knowledge is over. Knowledge has won. The remaining faithful have but one choice: convert to knowledge or go extinct.

An open response to creationists:

We recognize that the natural world is hideously complex, but to bring in the necessity of a creator is not a solution to the problem of "how we got here." To bring in the necessity of an infinitely complex god is to complicate the problem infinitely.

The next question is "how did god get there?" The creationist's response is that god is eternal!! This is an evasion. The creationist is really saying: "you have no right to challenge me on this; you are trespassing on theological turf." But no.......if the godly want to engage in debate--if they seek to debate as we do; to argue cause-and-effect--then they must follow through. They cannot chicken out at the last minute, when the questions get tough, and fail to hold up their end of the debate.

Do you think that we do not realise the difficulties with evoultion? Of course we do. But do you seriously suggest that you can preach your allknowing, allpowerful jewgod, who poofed the world into existence, and then sit back and chuckle as though you have provided a rebuttal? Tell us what accounts for your jewgod's existence--how can such a perfect being exist--and you will have won. Go ahead. We are listening.

The most comical thing about creationism is that, even if you prove the jewpoof over the bigbang, you still have to show that the creator really is the jewgod you worship, and not some other whacked-up deity. Lots of luck.

Just one more thing: it is insisted that you windbags can prove the bible "historically and archeologically." Okay, where is the tower of babel?

Oh, this is hilarious. anonymous, let me amend your statements:

Intellect builds up; love puts you on your knees.

Neither gods nor men can do; only I can do.

Atheists will be what they choose to be. You will be what you must be.

Ha ha, bananas were designed just for humans, that has got to be a joke! If bananas were "designed", it was probably for other primates. But, it got me to thinking, so I put "banana co-evolve" into Google and got this interesting piece of trivia

“Ancient farmers selected banana strains that were seedless and thus sterile, and grew the fruit through vegetative sprouting,” said Emile Frison, PhD, director of the Montpellier, France-based International Network for the Improvement of Banana and Plantain. “Cultivated bananas have, therefore, been at a near evolutionary standstill for thousands of years and lack the genetic diversity needed to fight off disease."

My daughter hates bananas and is glad that they are in trouble. I also read that scientists are trying to sequence the banana genome.

Hi Friends,
Those of you who know me know that I am a Christian [although not to the fundamentalists], I say this because I can never forget the night I gave my heart to Jesus, on a winter night in 1971, in my bedroom. Also I have always had a belief in God because of the magnificence of the heavens and the masterpiece called mankind. It's been a rough love/belief I have had because more than once I have shot God and challenged Him to get off His rear and fight me in my younger days-I know , I am a weird one. Anyway that's another story.
I detest these evangelists that say, "I have the one best answer", or "God gave me a special revelation on how to save your atheist neighbor and non-believer from the flames of hell. It's all enclosed in this special CD and easy to read book for your love gift of $49.95" blah, blah.
In regards to the banana and the way it is so wonderfully designed like a pop can to open using it's stem, I was either overseas or stateside when someone from the Philippines offered me a banana. I took it and began to open it the usual way when my friend asked me why I was opening it from that end. He then told me to open it from the stemless end and I found it to be much easier and more convenient. Also I did not squish the banana as much.
I will allow someone to believe as they wish as long as their belief system does not infringe upon my rights of free expression, allows me to pursue my dreams and shows me no hate or prejudice. I have no use for those who claim to be God's spokesman and then tell you that to hear what he hears it will cost you some selfish price.
I believe in God because it makes more sense for me to believe in an eternal being than to believe in eternal matter. But that is my belief and I have no right to damn anyone here for theirs or prove the superiority of mine to the hurt of their character.
I ask your forgiveness for the so many times us Christians have belittled you, hurt you, damned you, denied you and looked down upon your intelligence in the smuggery of our uncaring bigotry.
I also believe that the hand of man has corrupted the heart of God in the Bible and other writings.
If there is a God then He/She must have the attributes of love, justice, mercy, compassion, holiness, and forgiveness. None of these are exclusive unto itself and therefore teachings such as hell etc are the work of man. Some say "justice demands punishment" but I remind them that justice devoid of forgiveness, mercy and compassion is not justice but revenge.
If a person reads the Bible [especially the Old Testament/Tanach] you will see God acting as a butcher, murderer, kidnapper, the author of ethnic cleansing and a brutal, blood thirsty judge. Either God is said to do these things Himself or He tells others, ie the Hebrews, to do them on His behalf. Since all of these things contradict the nature of God, as I believe Him to be, I dismiss these things as a desire of man to impose his control over others for greed, power and prejudice.
I also find it the height of stupidity to hear a Christian say God has given us a free will and then go on to say that we must follow a certain path or be eternally damned for using our free will. It's something like God giving us a brain to think and then we are damned for using our brain as we best know how in an honest manner.
So all my friends here I just want you to know that God loves you and considers you significant and of great value and worth, as do I, and because of this we will all be together in that place I call heaven.
Can I prove this?-No, I can't even come close. Do I have an answer for all the terrible disasters that inflict so many?-Not in a million years.
But for me I rather like to think that the beauty of life will live on forever and that our God is not so insecure that He is threatened by what many of my fellow Christians would call blasphemy.
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and that 2007 will bring you much joy, fulfillment, warmth and love.
Your Friend,
blaine

Hello blaine,

I find very little to disagree with in you post above. In fact, I applaud most of it. For example, you said

"I will allow someone to believe as they wish as long as their belief system does not infringe upon my rights of free expression, allows me to pursue my dreams and shows me no hate or prejudice. I have no use for those who claim to be God's spokesman..."

I think the vast majority of the regulars here will whole-heartedly agree with that. Since you seem to be respectful of other people's views, I'd like to make a couple of suggestions in the spirit of constructive criticism. You said

"I ask your forgiveness for the so many times us Christians have belittled you, hurt you, damned you, denied you and looked down upon your intelligence in the smuggery of our uncaring bigotry."

While I agree with you that many Christian visitors here have been rude, some even bigoted, it really doesn't make much sense for you to apologize on their behalf. If they do not see the ugliness of their behavior, then it's rather difficult to accept a second-hand apology for it. I think the best you can do is to set a good example in your own behavior, and to admit that some members of your own religion simply chose not to do likewise. (The same can be said for any sufficiently large collection of people, by the way. I'm not picking on Christianity specifically here.) You also said

"So all my friends here I just want you to know that God loves you and considers you significant and of great value and worth,..."

Here I would urge you to make one small change: "So all my friends here I just want you to know that I believe God loves you..."

See the difference? The first version is offered as a statement of fact; and one that you know (or ought to know) that we disagree with, and that we will generally challenge. The second version is offered as an opinion, which is much harder to take issue with.

That's all for now. Be well.

I rarely comment but I just had to with this. Ray Comfort? I wonder if that's really his last name? What a dillhole. I guess if I scream and jump up and down and demand that evolution is real that will make it true for him. That's basically what he's doing with his "belief". I agree with hatepirate, answering those questions with 'probably' is an intellectually honest answer. At least I'm not a Christian ass and act like I know damn near everything just cause I say so and other people agree with me. Evolution is the best we can on now. Who knows what we'll discover?
Maybe we'll find out that we were created by aliens as an experiment. Even that makes more sense than creationism. Also why was this video posted again? It was originally put on the sight on 5/2/06. Not that I don't enjoy wanting to cram a banana up both those morons butts. Hell they probably do that to each other. It doesn't just fit only in the mouth.
Peace Out. Everybody.

Sorry that might have been snotty of me. I still stand by what I said but I don't want to sound like a jerk. I don't know everything and I never will. But until you Christians give a better argument, I'll stick to reading National Geographic. LOL.
Here's to keeping an open mind.

I reposted it because it fit with the article, and the article is new.

Also, as you can see by some of the comments, not everyone has seen the video.

I don't know about you, but I find such "catchphrases" so trite. If only reality were so black and white.

Arguing that that to remain ignorant is to your own sad disadvantage. While love can take many forms, both good, bad and quite twisted ones as well depending on the person doing the "loving"

Sadly what this easily repeatable catch phrase completely misses is the human behind the actions. It is the person who uses the knowledge to either promote her own arrogance or to humbly accept a nobel prize for DNA research. It is the person who is doing the "loving" who may use her love to build up those she loves or to kill her own offspring out of love to send them to a better life.

If you don't realize such basic differences, then you become the worst of the worst: the arrogant ignorant.

I really think Ray Comfort's board game, "Ex-atheist and Ex-evolutionist Design", could become a best seller if it were patterned after the "Left Behind" game-of which I saw many in Sam's Club-if all the creationists were sent on a mission to convert the evolutionists. For every conversion the creationists got they would get that closer to heaven. But every evolutionist who refused to be converted would be executed and the Christian creationist would get another virgin in heaven :-).

Here's a clippimg discribing their Board Game:

"Intelligent Design versus Evolution” is a new board game that was designed by actor Kirk Cameron and best-selling author Ray Comfort, to help fight against the what they maintain is the brainwashing of an entire generation.

Cameron said, “We are very excited about this game because it presents both sides of the creation evolution argument, and in doing so, shows that the contemporary theory of evolution is perhaps the greatest hoax of modern times.”

Comfort explains, “Intelligent Design Versus Evolution is unique in that the playing pieces are small rubber brains. We used the brains because want players to use their brains. The incentive is to play for ‘brain’ cards, and the team or individual with the most brains wins. There are brains all over the game, because we want to make people think deeply about what they believe.

The Sheepdog
“This is because the average person doesn’t know that the evolutionist lives by a blind faith in an unscientific theory (a theory that one scientist called a ’fairy-tale for grown-ups’). Through the game we show the irrational nature of evolution, using their own beliefs and quotes. This explains why evolutionists have a special language, something we call ‘the language of speculation,’ where they use words like ‘We believe, perhaps, probably, maybe, could have . . . ’ They can’t speak of their theory without it.

"Cameron adds, “To believe in evolutionary ‘transitional forms’ is to hold to the belief that one species evolved into another. However, there is no scientific evidence of any species evolving into another—not in creation, nor in the ‘fossil record.’ Most people don’t know that.
The board game is commended by well-known creationist Ken Ham, of "Answers in Genesis," who says that it clearly reveals the “bankruptcy of molecules-to-man evolution.”

And they want people to use their brains, I hope no one takes these nutjobs serious.

Not only is it an evasion but to use God's eternity or other trait is to commit a circular argument and special plead as Sahakian does in his book on introductory philosophy when he decries our asking who made God. Not only is God subject to logical laws but also to morality and since he unlike good parents chose to put many of us in horrendous conditions to test us to see if we could have faith in Him and measure up to goodness- the epistemic and soul - making arguments of John Hick respecitively. Why not Heaven iin the first place whithout special pleading ? If we would be robots here if we could do no wrong why not there also. If God has free will and can do no wrong, how can He be moral and thus not a robot. Theists special plead, having it both ways!

Having been sucked into xtianity as a young adult, and having graduated with honours from the Moody Bible Institute with additional graduate degrees from secular universities in the history of xtianity, social sciences, human sexuality, and having taught at both secular and religious universities, and having been the director of field studies in a graduate program in xtian apologetics, and having rejected xtianity after years of trying to ignore all of its problems, I have to say that what really convinces me that judeo-xtianity is essentially so much horse-hockey is the fact that their god discriminates against amputees!! Has anyone ever seen an amputee get healed by having his/her limb instantly restored?? It's obvious that god hates amputees and prefers to heal those with less obvious physical problems.

Blogger blaine said...
Thanks Jim Arvo for your comments on my post and I understand your point in my last indicative statement as God existing and I agree with your premise but because I care for you all here I feel I can do no less than to declare the existence of God and His blessings upon each of you because that's my heart speaking. Maybe it extends from my violent childhood which I have posted on MY Space at www.myspace.com/sloopy312.
Also the statement of Morgan-Lynn is accurate and one which theists cannot explain by their orthodoxy. How do I explain my basic view of God you ask? My beliefs are a mixture of Buddhism, Humanism, Deists and Christianity. My background after 1971 was fundamental Christian, Baptist [where I got my seminary degree in Bible Languages and pastored 3 churches and taught in seminary] and later in the Assemblies of God I was asked to get ordained by them which I declined because of my changing doctrinal views. I was a mentor to other pastors and an apologist with an invitation to debate the top apologist of the Catholic church. I also had the humble honor of teaching at Moscow Bible College.
Why has my theology changed? Because I could no longer stand the hypocrisy of these fundamental churches. They did not accept my Mafia, Syndicate, Gang and Street, and Gay "kids" with a truly warm, honest and open heart.
As Morgan pointed out, concerning free will and morality, the fundamental, evangelical Christian view cannot pass the test of logic and its own standard of morality. To repeat Morgan's statement,"...Not only is God subject to logical laws but also to morality and since he unlike good parents chose to put many of us in horrendous conditions to test us to see if we could have faith in Him and measure up to goodness- the epistemic and soul - making arguments of John Hick respecitively. Why not Heaven iin the first place whithout special pleading ? If we would be robots here if we could do no wrong why not there also. If God has free will and can do no wrong, how can He be moral and thus not a robot...".
A couple of years ago I wrote this, "I cannot believe in any writings which lessen the dignity of mankind and speaks more of his deprivation, wickedness and worthlessness than of his beauty, grandeur and value. I cannot believe in a God who says we were created in His image and likeness and then that same God sends His image and likeness to a fiery hell for not thinking like He does when we thought we we were serving Him as he desired. How can I unquestionably accept the Bible when it lessens the majesty of a loving God and looks upon His finest creation as better dead than Bible fed".
But in spite of how religion has distorted the majesty of God I still believe in Him because I cannot deny what is in my heart and being. I do love Him even though I cannot prove Him, understand Him or make sense of the atrocities so many experience.
I realize I have made little logical sense but I would rather believe that none of us are an accident of chemistry and that each of us are wonderfully significant, and that this thing called life will never be extinguished.
Take care my friends and I wish each of you a wonderful and happy 2007.
