As part of a plea deal reached by the State of Alabama and the victims of convicted sex offenders, Ralph Randall Melton and his wife, Cathy G. Melton, were sentenced to spend slightly more than three months is prison followed by 36 months probation.

Circuit Judge Sibley Reynolds delivered the sentence yesterday morning after making sure the victims fully understood that what was about to be delivered was light considering the charges.

"Are you sure you want to do this," he asked family members gathered at the bench. "As far as the (plea) deal, I'd like nothing more than to put them away for the rest of their lives."

The couple plead guilty last month to raping and sodomizing their two children over a period of 18 years. The pair's daughter, Catherine Smith, said she and her brother, Andy Melton, agreed to the deal to expedite the legal process and put the whole situation behind them.

"Our justice will come after this lifetime," she said. "This has been dragging on for three years. We just wanted to put it behind us."

She added the fact that her parents now must register as convicted sex offenders was a consolation.

"Now, everyone will know what they've done," she said. "That will follow them for the rest of their lives like the memories of what they have done will follow us for the rest of ours."

Smith, who claimed she was repeatedly raped between 1975 and 1987, filed charges against the couple in April 2004.

Charges by the couple's son, Andy, soon followed.

Melton was the pastor at Prospect Baptist Church in Wilsonville at the time of his arrest, but has also been the pastor of New Salem Baptist Church and Big Springs Baptist Church in Chilton County.

Before the sentence was handed down, Jimmy Smith, Catherine's husband, read a statement from the victims detailing the abuse suffered at the hands of their parents.

"Catherine was robbed of the joy of growing up in a safe and happy family environment," the letter read. "Instead, she grew up in fear of what was to happen next."

"Andy has had his childhood robbed from him also," the letter continued. "He never enjoyed the games that normal seven-year-old boys played like baseball, football and basketball - instead Mr. and Mrs. Melton would include him in their sick, perverted games that lead to his rape by Mrs. Melton."

Before he was escorted from before the bench by deputies, Melton offered a muttered apology to his victims.

It is sad that the abuse of children through the use of enemas and other methods of 'spiritual cleansing' in Christian sects such as Seventh Day Adventists, Baptists and others is not prosecutable by law. A child cannot if he finds him or herself suddenly incontinent in class simply report it to his teacher or doctor/s as a result of the repeated use of enemas by their adult caretakers who do so for 'religious reasons.'
There are teachers in various communities where such enema practices are popular as a matter of church doctrines by the prevailing Christian sects who will tell you that it is a common occurrence among their students to have bouts of incontinence, eating disorders and emotional disorders because of the shame of this practice visited upon these children and which because it is sanctioned under 'religious reasons' the school districts, educators and the law turn a blind eye to it!

Enemas f0r spiritual cleansing? I don't know about the Adventists, but I was a Baptist for over 30 years and never heard of such a thing. Regardless, this doesn't seem to be about spiritual cleansing. The parents pled guilty of rape and sodomy.

What a truly shocking and disgusting thing for these parents to have done to their own children, let alone any children.

This is why I do not believe there is such a thing as a "holy spirit." If there were, no one would have come to hear this sick freak's sermons. The all-knowing, all-powerful god via his "spirit" would have kept the christians away. If you have god's spirit living inside of you, you would have an unbelievable amount of intuition--there would be nothing you couldn't know. But yet, christians can't seem to tell the "real" pastors apart from the closet freaks.

It's too bad the kids didn't put their parents away. This is one of those rare times that I wished there were a hell--these two deserve it.

Great post, Michelle! I agree 100% -- Or as I used to say, "Amen, sister."

Thanks Lorena. I'd like to know where the holy spirit was when these kids were being abused for so long. He/it couldn't nudge one of the congregation to say, "Hey, this pastor's a pervert, help those kids!" Of course christians would come up with all kids of excuses why god allowed this to happen. Pathetic.

The annoying, frustrating vomit-making thing about this and cases like this is that in the eyes of the faithful, these evil bastards will be off to heaven, while their non Christians victims are off to hell! Absolutely sickening the whole lying business of religion.

I grew up in the Seventh Day Adventist church and never received an enema. Don't know anyone else who did.

Please let's be factual. The very reason we are here is because we don't believe the lies that were told to us. Let us not make up our own.

Hi. My name is Andy. Yes that's right. The same as the article talks about. I know everyone has their own views and opinions but I can honestly say that I/we survived because God was with us. We didn't do this for vengence or self-gratification. Merely just for injust. A "slap on the wrist" is what we requested. If you've never experienced what we have, you can't possibly understand. I forgave my parents a long time ago they just refused to see what it was they had done wrong. As far as the enema thing..... you truely are sick. My intentions are not to offend but to defend. We, my sister & I simply chose to do this not for public hummilation or recognition but for justice. They were released yesterday. And still think that "we" did them wrong. I pray for them that they will understand where there are actions there must be reactions. Or consequences. These are my opinions. And they may not matter to you but that's ok. And as for the Holy Spirit.... God is more real to me now than ever before. Just as His Son and His Holy Spirit is. God is faithful.

In Christian Love,

andy

Andy: "I know everyone has their own views and opinions but I can honestly say that I/we survived because God was with us."

Okay, so you believe a god involves themselves in your life. So, in essence, your God was also the one who allowed this event to take place - nice god you have there.

Andy: "We didn't do this for vengence or self-gratification."

If your god is involved in your life as much as you say, then "you" didn't do anything... your "god" iniated all the actions, you were just a bystander and nothing more. You are nothing without your god, but, your god may not exist, therefore, you are nothing in this life, and only have a hope of becoming something more once you die - good luck buddy.

Andy: "Merely just for injust. A "slap on the wrist" is what we requested."

How dare you ask for anything, your god will provide - don't be a hypocrite.

Andy: "If you've never experienced what we have, you can't possibly understand."

But your god knows all, therefore, you need to keep that in mind, and let your god provide justice - you need to stay out of your life.

Andy: "I forgave my parents a long time ago they just refused to see what it was they had done wrong."

Kind of like someone trying to explain how Santa Clause or God doesn't exist, yet, people continue to suggest they "believe". A christian who tells "anyone" that another persons' views are absurd, is attacking the very foundation the christian view is premised upon, namely, self-induced belief in the face of oppositional information and reality.

Andy: "As far as the enema thing..... you truely are sick. My intentions are not to offend but to defend."

Is not your god capable of defending themselves/itself?

Andy: "We, my sister & I simply chose to do this not for public hummilation or recognition but for justice."

That is not your position in life, you don't have that right as a true christian. Vengeance is your gods', not yours.

Andy: "They were released yesterday. And still think that "we" did them wrong."

A christian is beyond condemnation by anyone, especially other christians who are obviously waiting for their judgement by a "higher" authority, uh, that would be higher than humanity.

Andy: "I pray for them that they will understand where there are actions there must be reactions."

Sounds deterministic and Newtonian to me, how does that tie into morality? Are you free to choose your acts in life, or are you guided by a higher power at all times, or... does your god moonlight and only appear when your god feels it necessary?

Andy: "Or consequences. These are my opinions. And they may not matter to you but that's ok."

That's the most logical thing you have stated thus far, congratulations.

Andy: "And as for the Holy Spirit.... God is more real to me now than ever before. Just as His Son and His Holy Spirit is. God is faithful."

Actually, if your god is "always present", omnipresent, then your god doesn't have a choice on whether or not to be faithful in presence to you... your god by default is omnipresent whether your "god" wants to or not, your god doesn't get the choice. Well, uh, unless you are capable of providing information that suggests your god is not omnipresent throughout the universe at all times, but, of course, if you did that, you'd prove that your god is a summer-god... you know... "sometimes there", and "sometimes not". Well, I suppose you'd have to be omniscient to make such a statement on behalf of an omniscient god, right, are you a god? Perhaps, you are faithful to your beliefs, more, than you are faithful to that which you can't possibly know.

Anonymous..... You make it sound as if being a christian makes me exempt from the harm in the world. Do you see the wind? You see the effects of the wind but not see the wind. How do I know God is real? I am created by unique design. You are created by unique design. I was not a freak accident that stumbled along over millions of years that started started as a cosmic rock orgy. And neither were you. Why do you hate so much? I do not spend my days and night trying to tear down your walls. It is not my duty to condem or convict. Simply to present. Jesus died for you and me out of love. An unconditional love. Where was my God? Hanging on a cross. Suffering with me. I don't expect you to understand. And that's ok.... I don't understand alot of it either. But I will. Someday we all will.

No anony, you were not created by a freak accident from a rock orgy. You are the gradual progression of evolution over millions of years.

Evolution is a cumulative affect, not an instantaneous appearance.

However, I guess believing that men and women materialized instantly out of dirt makes much more sense to people.

Regardless, I wonder what how your comments relate with a pastor and wife sex offenders. Hmm...

Andy, do not cast pearls to the pigs. Your ability to forgive is beyond the reach of mere man.Few christians would be able to just forgive, but then I believe it is a process. God does not give us the command to forgive and not give us the tools. First His Spirit within us working as we see that our woundedness is either growing and festering and taking us apart from our Savior, or the pain is getting smaller and being replaced with growth and trust in HIM. Bless you that His spirit is real in you and showing. Our testing is for our benefit.
Romans 9:14

I love it when Christians pull a Bible verse out of context and use it as a weapon against those who disagree with them.

Let's see what the writer of Matthew had in mind when he penned those "pearls before pigs" statement.

Matthew 7:
1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.

2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?

5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

6 Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

Verses 1-5 are clearly about the dangers of judging other "brothers," other Jewish brothers, specifically. Yet many Christians now use verse 6 to quickly judge anyone who disagrees with them, especially unbelievers. Verses 1-5 admonish Jewish brothers to stop judging each other -- that is abundantly clear. So, keeping things in context, what could the writer be thinking in verse 6? Is he really giving license to believers to condemn unbelievers? Is that at the writer really intended?

This is not what the verse is saying. Casting your pearls before swine is figurative of throwing away the supposed holy attributes that believers should possess and show toward each other, such as a non-judgmental, forgiving attitude. Believers shouldn’t hypocritically feed any dog-like fighting resentment toward other brothers with “that which is holy.” The danger feared here is that unrestrained resentment and anger amongst the brethren will tear the community of believers apart.

This verse is not a rebuke to non-believers, it is a rebuke toward so-called believers – specifically, hypocrites.

Andy said, "An unconditional love."

Well, if it is unconditional love, then there is nothing I have to do to receive it. It has no conditions -- that's what unconditional means.

Then Andy said, "I don't understand alot of it either."

Hmm. I guess Andy doesn't get it either. Does that make us both blessed?

Regardless, I really don't understand what any of this has to do with a Pastor and his wife being found to be sex offenders. I suppose we'll all understand that someday too?
