NEW YORK — A Bronx special education teacher was arrested Tuesday for telling school officials he was being deployed to assist with Hurricane Katrina relief efforts when he actually traveled to Brazil for personal reasons, investigators said.

James Thomas, who is also the pastor of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Bronx, was charged with forgery, false records and larceny.

Thomas, a teacher at the Fordham Leadership Academy for Business and Technology, received $828 in salary for four days in October during which he claimed that he had been on active military duty in New Orleans, according Richard Condon, the special commissioner of investigation for the city schools.

Thomas allegedly faked deployment documents from the Air National Guard, where he was a lieutenant colonel, so that he could attend a religious conference in Brazil.

He was reassigned to administrative duty following the Dec. 12 release of the report by Condon's office.

Thomas retired from the Air National Guard following the incident, said Maj. Emily Desrosier, a spokeswoman for the 106th Rescue Wing. The teacher served with the Westhampton Beach-based unit for 28 years as chaplain.

This all sounds perfectly reasonable, God may have changed his plans in mid-stream, where ever God leads you you must follow. We can't follow a blind path when it comes to saving souls. To have went to N.O. instead of Brazil would have meant treason with God, I can tolerate mans punishment, over God's punishmant any day.

Just think about it, if you're a professed Christian, you're really not under your own control, you must obey God, although Satan...he he, always manages a way to throw a monkey wrench into the works and he makes you the one that looks bad.

I am deeply impressed by Ben's sound and devoted theology of God's changed plan in the mid-stream of J.T's going to N.O.. I just thought it's J.T.'s plan to Brazil from the first time.

OK, Ben, go on. I am learning a lot from your faith of the mid-stream. he he...^^

So, a LtCol making a few bucks from the taxpayer, and breaking the first air force core value, integrity, and not being thrown out. Probably has something to do with him being a chaplain, they have their own set of values obviously.

Ben, you either totally missed the point, or you're in favor of deceit and theft as long as it's to further Christian doctrine.

More relativism from the "family values," crowd.

Mr. Thomas' plans weren’t changed in midstream. He falsified records and blatantly lied so he could do what he wanted.

So, it’s O.K. to undermine the integrity between humans? Nice.

I was trying to be facetious as I possibly can be, my comment was aimed at a fundy in hopes for that light bulb moment, but not very likely...sorry for the misunderstanding.
