Fort Washington Church Suspends Member Over Charges in Fairfax CityA ministry leader at one of Prince George's County's largest churches has been charged in Fairfax City with raping and beating a woman in a hotel parking lot in January, and this week he was suspended from his church duties.
The Rev. Eugene A. Marriott Jr., 41, of Clinton was the "minister of men" at the 10,000-member Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal Church in Fort Washington, one of the largest AME churches in the country. Marriott was arrested Jan. 14 and spent four days in the Fairfax County jail before a $20,000 bond was set. The church placed him on administrative leave with pay.
But after learning details of the attack on the woman from a reporter, the church on Monday suspended all of Marriott's rights and privileges within the church. It would not discuss whether he was still being paid.
Marriott said he could not comment, on the advice of his attorney, Bobby Stafford of Alexandria. Stafford said, "I never discuss a pending legal case."
According to Fairfax County court records, Marriott and the woman, 34, left the Taj Bar and Grill at the Best Western Hotel on Chain Bridge Road shortly before midnight Jan. 14 and walked to Marriott's Saab sedan. The woman told police that once inside the car, Marriott became angry, began to hit her, forced her to perform oral sex, dragged her out of the car and raped her on the car.
Marriott then threw the woman to the ground, beat her and raped her again, according to search warrant affidavits by Fairfax City Detective Edward Vaughn.
The woman said Marriott then tried to force oral sex again when police officers arrived and arrested Marriott, about 12:20 a.m. The woman suffered numerous cuts, scrapes, bruises and "marks that appear to have been caused by a belt," Vaughn observed, and "was stunned by the attack and emotionally distraught."
Vaughn wrote that he interviewed Marriott, who told him that the assault was "a form of role-playing" and that, as part of his alternative lifestyle, he had posted photos of himself and others engaged in various sex acts on the Internet. Police then seized Marriott's laptop computer.
Marriott has a preliminary hearing Tuesday in Fairfax General District Court on charges of rape, forcible sodomy, malicious wounding and abduction with intent to defile.
In 2002, Marriott was charged in Prince George's District Court with second-degree assault on his wife, Chandra D. Marriott, also a minister at Ebenezer. Court records indicate that Marriott threw his wife on a couch and hit her on the hand and leg with a belt.
The charge was dismissed after Marriott completed counseling and refrained from violent contact with his wife, court records show.
On Sunday, the Rev. Grainger Browning, pastor of Ebenezer, asked people attending the 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. services to pray for a member of the ministerial staff. Although he did not mention Marriott by name, most of the church's staff and many members had heard about the allegations.
"This is a time of prayer for our congregation," Browning said Monday.
Marriott balanced duties as a lay church leader while running a computer firm that specialized in educating and training people for careers in computer science. Court records indicate that he also works as a loan officer in McLean.
He also was the leader of a group in which men openly shed tears to God, embrace each other and shed all pretense as they practice a faith that is raw and interpersonal. Ebenezer attracts men from all walks of life, ranging from elected officials and business executives to football coaches and bus drivers.
"You can't have power until you receive Holy Ghost power," Marriott once said in an interview.
One of Marriott's specialties was hosting "for men only" events, either at a conference center in Leesburg or at out-of-town venues. These gatherings were seen as a time of fellowship in which men could talk and improve their marriage and family life.
After he was released on bond Jan. 18, one of his conditions was that he stay out of Virginia. But last month, he persuaded a Fairfax judge to allow him to enter the state for his job as a loan officer and "for scheduled speaking engagements."
Marriott said in a 2000 interview that he joined Ebenezer in 1993. He said at the time that Browning and other church leaders encouraged him to launch a private computer school, the Computer Trainer, which he said then had projected revenues of $2.5 million annually.
At the time, Marriott was also a seminarian. He said he was attracted to Ebenezer because the men were different than the type one finds in church.
"The men were not like the stereotype I had of a Christian man," Marriott said. "Instead, I could identify with them. They were strong men who had goals and desires. They were police officers, in the military, business owners. . . . Instead of going to the bars and complaining, I could talk to the brothers, and we could work it out."
Once again, this is not a matter of perfection. We all say one thing and do another. We all crossed the gray lines of right and wrong and yes, we, humans often fail each other miserably but we are not talking about shortcomings in emotional support here.
Adultery is not a mistake. It’s not a happenstance. It’s not like you mixed a teaspoon of salt into your tea because you thought it was sugar. You just don’t slip on top of someone while he/she just happened to be horizontal and naked. Committing adultery is a systematic process and each step is deliberate and purposeful.
When someone is responsible for upholding the standard and also allowed to lop guilt and condemnation onto others for the sins of lustfulness, adultery, and divorce, there is not a lot of wiggle room for failing to uphold said standard and certainly there is not enough room to wiggle around with someone else.
The physical action of committing adultery is truly the lesser of the crimes committed. The higher crime is the flagrant and systematic disregard for the standards that someone is supposed to duly uphold.
This was on the evening news in the DC area. This power-crazed minister is charged with raping and beating the woman repeatedly. The reporters said he did this to her in the parking lot of a restaurant in front of multiple witnesses.
This cannot be excused by saying "everybody makes mistakes and none of us is perfect."
Perhaps those of you who attend Ebenezer can tell the rest of us, how is the vicitm getting along? Is the congregation showing as much sympathy for her as they are for this criminal?
The source of all evil in this world is the threat of force and use of force to make individuals conform to unreasonable demands.
Of course, ministers don't operate on reason. Rather, they thrive on people willing to live on their knees.
Signed, a True Christian and member Ebenezer
To God be the Glory!
It is kind of funny when you think about it. We preach love in the AME Church, but we barley want to hold the person's hand that sitting next us in the pews. This is not fellowship, but a spirit of selfishness. AME was a better organization when we use to move preachers around ever two years. Is that what being a traveling preacher is all about?
I pray for Eugene the man who is a sinner that still can be saved by grace. I also pray for the young woman who also played a bigger part in this incident than any of us will ever know. I believe in this one thing, when God wants to get our attention he sometimes does it in a way that will help others. See this incident may have very well saved or swayed a lot of questionable activity by preachers and various members within our churches. God loves his children but accepting Jesus is but one step towards glory. When a Christian develops an understanding of salvation he or she is then required to seek the face of God daily. This means that we are required to move towards higher ground striving always to improve our walk. Accepting Christ does not mean we do what ever we want knowing that we can repent later. Why? Well, because as quickly as God accepted you into Glory he can cast you back out to the end of the line until you have reestablished your spiritual DSL connection.
People are count us as Christians we do our people and ourselves a disservice when we play games with our religion. For Eugene Marriott, I pray that God has mercy on his soul. Many men cheat which is a deplorable thing, but beating a woman is learned activity that had to have been transferred from his childhood past as a child. Either way it is wrong. What do you think Marriott would do if someone beat or rape the little girl he and his wife have adopted? He would want to punish that person right? So we must not glory the person, but realized the problem of sin and further acknowledge that this brother was talking the talk, but not walking the walk. In closing I will say this that many people at Ebenezer AME walk around with a sense of arrogance while project an elitist persona, and it is this mindset that hurts our people. You don’t believe me walk up to someone after church and ask them for a ride to the closest metro. I can almost guarantee you that most folks will give you an excuse. Their only understanding of Jesus is the over dramatized celebration that we now call Christian worship.
If the Church is to be the church then we should be honest when influential people in our churches slip. It was Ebenezer’s Minister of music Byron Cage that was arrested in Aug of 2006 in Arlington for DUI, but did the church address the issue? No, so again we see the church burying the tainted sins of our people, which only hinders the progress of our people. GOD BLESS!
He has been doing this for years and has hurt many people along the way. He was caught now...does that mean the heart is changed?

I had been going to Ebenezer AME since 1996 and thought that I had found a great church home. Don't get me wrong Pastor and co-pastor Browning are wonderful and blessed but there is a spirit in that place now and I shall never return. The funny thing is that he was our marriage counselor and he was the leader of the Men's ministry. He actually directed a Men's ministry sermon to me and talked about free will. Maybe he was trying to convince me that it was okay for him to sleep with my wife and have her performe oral sex on him. The emails they sent back and forth were great. Perhaps he viewed his position as a man of God as an opportunity to sleep with many women. Good luck with that. Perhaps he can get all of the sex he wants in jail. I wish him the best.
I am not one to throw stones. This situation is truly a tragedy. A lot of people suffered from this. Marriott's family has suffered, the Men's ministry, the Church membership, The woman involved and the brother himself. My heartfelt prayers go out to all that have suffered through this tragic situation.
"Hi, uncle Tyr! Hi, cousin Forseti! Could you take a look into this "Ebenezer" thing and ensure that justice is done to the full extent of the law? Thanks muchly. (Oh, and please drop in for mead and cookies next time you're in the neighbourhood.)"
I don't get your Norse Mythological references. Next time, try to be wittier in your sarcasm.
To others who may have been honestly puzzled by my comment about Tyr and Forseti: Someone asked for prayers. I went "Okay, fine... You want prayers? I'm asking for justice, truth and resolution of this whole sordid mess."
Justice and truth. Vindication of the innocent and punishment of the guilty. Not forgiveness.
Thanks.
Let's see, raping and beating a woman in a hotel parking lot, so long as you are a Christian, is just a little mistake that no one should be overly concerned about?
Interesting.
were you there that night... do you know what went on. Unless you are the woman involved you cannot judge. I never made any reference to rape being acceptable if you are a Christian...Please read the comment. How dare YOU judge...are you God?
Don't Hate!
Huh?
A ministry leader has been charged with raping and beating a woman in a motel parking lot. Stating this is not hating. Calling this type of behavior criminal is not hating.
So, I take it that serving on a jury, and deciding on the guilt or innocence of this "Man of God" is also hating?
You Christians have an odd idea of what justice is all about.
Strange. Very strange.
So, no one can know if this man is guilty, because only the woman can tell what really happened.
OK.
But Christians can claim that Jesus is a flying un-dead god-man, because someone a couple of thousand years ago says so?
Interesting. Very interesting.
It is the place of every person of conscience and who has some degree of hope for our society to hold those who violate the public trust and/or commit crimes accountable before the law. Period.
"He is a human after all and NOONE is perfect. We all make mistakes."
How many times have you "mistakenly" beaten your spouse? How many times have you "mistakenly" beaten someone other than your spouse? How many times have you "mistakenly" had sex with someone other than your spouse? How many times have you "mistakenly" sexually assaulted someone?
Well...?
Hotep!
I was overcome by her alcohol soaked breath and her need for man-flesh, so, in a moment of weakness, right there in the parking lot, I raped and beat the ho. It was just a mistake on my part. Her, she was gunning for me, and deserved it.
What surprised me beyond belief is that anyone would find my behavior in that moment of weakness reprehensible. But I'm not concerned, because my bros understand. And my LAWD GAWD stands with me.
WOWEE WOW!
I have stood with Gino throughout and I never doubted him. I have faith in him. He is a wonderful man who made a mistake. I will be there for him as well throughout this time (I begin counting the days until he is released). I know he will rise again and I too look forward to that day when he will show all those nay sayers what a real man is made of. I pray every day that he keeps his strength. I am sickened to hear about the sentencing. I tried to contact the friend Gino told me to call but the number he gave me was wrong. I NEED to find out where he is so I can visit and write to him. I will continue praying for him, his daughter, family and friends that they keep the faith and love they have for him because he deserves it and more!!!
Our justice system is, I agree, far from perfect. Having lived in PG and Charles county myself, I remember how screwed up some of the judges in that area were or maybe still are (Richard Palumbo comes immediately to mind). However, considering this man's violent history with his own wife makes your comment here sound extremely ridiculous, but not just for that reason.
This man's choices got him in trouble in the first place. "Whitey" wasn't waiting in the wings for him to screw up so they could make an example of him. Furthermore, his accuser may be who some here have asserted her to be, a lying criminal in her own right. Yet she's responsible for her own behavior, and he's responsible for his. We are all responsible for our own choices. You can either come to terms with that and work for the betterment of social conditions here in the U.S., or you can continue to nurse that victim complex. It's your choice.
God isn't going to do it for you, no matter how much you pray for it.
"What surprised me beyond belief is that anyone would find my behavior in that moment of weakness reprehensible. But I'm not concerned, because my bros understand. And my LAWD GAWD stands with me."
Please, read the Bible...I doubt God is standing with you while you were raping a woman in your "weakness"
Hotep!
Somebody filed assault charges. I guess that was some white dude, huh? Maybe it was Satan?
"As jury selection entered a second day, Marriott decided to enter an Alford plea to abduction with intent to defile and unlawful wounding. An Alford plea means a defendant does not admit guilt but acknowledges that prosecutors may have enough evidence to convict." See here.
Guess his lawyer, Bobby Stafford, didn't think he had much of a case. Maybe that was Satan too?
If Rev. Marriott's innocent, why don't you go ask him or his lawyer why he's going to jail?
Hotep!
But no matter what, Rev. Marriott made poor choices and is being held accountable. I'll just take it as a sign of his humanity and another testament to the imaginary nature of the Holy Spirit.
Have a nice day.
Hotep!
On the contrary, I think if you did that it would show a lack of self-respect.
Being self-aware is one thing - a good thing. Self-aware people know the obstacles they face and don't waste time bemoaning those obstacles. Instead, they act to overcome them.
A person with a victim mentality isn't self-aware. Instead, the victim is someone who lets external circumstances determine who they are and what they can or can't do. The victim doesn't really want anything to change though, because the victim depends on the obstacles to define their condition.
By your words here, you appear to define your world by the racial disparities that exist in the U.S.. Calling efforts to change social conditions "lofty" and "näive" gives you an out to avoid taking action to change them, not only for yourself but for future generations.
"the holy spirit was not upon him...whats so imaginary about that?"
O.K.. Maybe the Holy Spirit was too busy to help the good Reverend in his moment of weakness?
"...things get a little out of control and tempers flare. the wife calls 911..."
...and files assault charges but is willing to drop them if her husband gets counseling.
So, did he assault his wife or not? Did she think he was?
Look, we agree that Rev. Marriott made poor choices. We also agree that he's human. The reason this item is posted here is because he happens to be a minister - a church leader - not because of his race. It is meant to illustrate that the alleged transforming power of the Holy Spirit and faith in God are no insurance against making poor choices, committing crimes, or whatever else you might call sin. Please notice the title of the website.
Stick any label you think is appropriate on me, Hotep.
news papers spin sensationalism to sell papers...they don't give a damn about the truth
Which parts of the article are wrong?
seems quite evident that the holy spirit was not upon him in that moment of weakness and humanism.
What seems evident is this "holy spirit" doesn't exist.
Look at the name of the web site!
We are NOT christians!
WE can judge anybody we want to!
Now, I am not saying that we should do this or even that we have. Just that, we don't have any stupid rules that say we can't. Just our own personal set of ethics - which is more than enough.
Also, the courts ultimately judged Gino and found him guilty. If you believe this was a travesty of justice, for whatever reason, then I say ok - maybe it was. It certainly wouldn't be the first and it won't be the last.
I think the one thing that everyone can agree to is that the government doesn't work the way it ought to.
And it probably never will.
Our interest in this is in how this case represents christianity as a religion? We want to know how your god could have allowed this to happen; to have sanctioned this so called injustice that has tainted your church?
Whether Gino was really guilty or not doesn't change the fact that your god could have prevented the whole episode and didn't.
Signed,
Annonymous# 2 (some very good points although I don't agree with them all. I can appreciate your point of view and how you presented them!) I won't get into the debate of our "god" could have allowed this!
Making excuses for convicted criminals and blaming the victims of their crimes is not a good way to view the world. Please put aside your emotions and examine the evidence with an unbiased eye.
And "the devil" is not the mastermind behind every event that doesn't go the way you want it to.
PEACE

"As a Christian I must forgive him but as a man it is tough to forgive a man who had sexual relations with my wife. This went on, unbeknownst to me, for over a year. We have since been separated and will NEVER get back together. Funny, I may not be the only husband to be in this situation at Ebenezer.

I will comment...dude who's wife was done by gino is a clasic cuckhold who, for some deeply seeded reason, enjoyed knowing his wife performed felatio on other men. Trust...gino wasn't the first and only one. as for commenting on the morality of gino's action, who cares? I've got no heaven or hell to put anyone in, let alone gino. Besides, I don't have time nor inclination to even concern myself with deciding on wheither it is true or not. But I do know that if it is true, the cuck dude needs to come to grips with his fetishes.
