An executive committee member of the Southern Baptist Convention was arrested on a lewdness charge for propositioning a plainclothes policeman outside a hotel, police said.

Lonnie Latham, senior pastor at South Tulsa Baptist Church, was booked into Oklahoma County Jail Tuesday night on a misdemeanor charge of offering to engage in an act of lewdness, police Capt. Jeffrey Becker said. Latham was released on $500 bail Wednesday afternoon.

Latham, who has spoken out against homosexuality, asked the officer to join him in his hotel room for oral sex. Latham was arrested and his 2005 Mercedes automobile was impounded, Becker said.

Calls to Latham at his church were not immediately returned Wednesday.

When he left jail, he said:

"I was set up. I was in the area pastoring to police."

The arrest took place in the parking lot of the Habana Inn, which is in an area where the public has complained about male prostitutes flagging down cars, Becker said. The plainclothes officers was investigating these complaints.

The lewdness charge carries a penalty of up to one year in jail and a $2,500 fine.

Latham is one of four Southern Baptist Convention executive committee members from Oklahoma.

He spoke out last year against a measure, ultimately approved by voters, to expand tribal gaming.

He has also spoken out against same-sex marriage and in support of a Southern Baptist Convention directive urging its 42,000 churches to befriend gays and lesbians and try to convince them that they can become heterosexual "if they accept Jesus Christ as their savior and reject their 'sinful, destructive lifestyle."'

The Southern Baptist Convention is the nation's largest Protestant denomination.

[Is there are double standard here?]

"I was set up. I was in the area pastoring to police."

[Ahh so it was a set up. So what was it going to be right after he got his fix? Was he going preached Jesus to police office?]

Reminds me of an old joke: Don't ever take a baptist fishing with you cuz he'll drink all your beer. Take two baptists and they won't drink any! Religious people are no different than anyone else. They are perfect in church but outside they are just like anyone else. Nothing surprises me anymore, nothing.

Also ironic, yesterday's Tulsa World had a more indepth article on this arrest (they make you pay to use their internet service or else I would post the article) there was a story about the Indian tribes upholding the marriage of two women two years ago.

One story of a pastor who is against such marriages getting caught in a compromising situation and the second two lesbians celebrating the fact that the Indian Tribal Council of Oklahoma upheld their marriage.

Tulsa world article states that Latham followed the officer for several blocks. When the officer pulled into a parking lot, Latham pulled up along side him and asked about oral sex. Hardly, sounds like a set up to me. Also, there are now published reports about Latham getting a ticket in this same general area in the recent past.

Jim Earl said, "Religious people are no different than anyone else. They are perfect in church but outside they are just like anyone else."

But they are worse than everyone else because they lie about who they are and preach one thing but practice another. They are hypocrites.

That is what makes priests and pastors so much worse than the average pedophile or male prostitute or prostitute customer...they hold everyone to a standard they themselves can't uphold and they have put themselves in a position that encourages people to trust them. They are two-faced snakes.

This just in: Rev. Lonnie has resigned from South Baptist Church of Tulsa, Ok and the executive committee of the SB convention per local radio.

Janet is right: This is much worse than your average joe. Rev. Lonnie's actions have hurt much more people than if he would have been honest about his preferences to begin with. He has a wife and children that are very devestated about this. Hopefully, at least, they might become more compassionate to those around them. Plus, this man was one of them supporting the anti-gay marriage ban in Oklahoma this past election cycle. I wonder if you can make a homo a hetro according to Rev Lonnie, why had it not worked for him? Or was he just lying to himself.

I just want to run towards the wall and stump my feet saying, Thank You, Thank You Jesus for this man, this man is truly a warrior for God, he was out there pastoring to the Police dressed in high heels, a wig and stockings for Jesus, who else but a true servant of God would even remotely go out in full drag? I mean come on, who else but a true servant of God, this man went over and beyound his call of duty for the Lord to keep AIDS off the street, to keep the infected sperm out of out harms way from our little innocent children, he was in effect took the bullet so to speak. As I may paraphase a quote from that glourious book called the BIBLE, as I'm sure many of you unrighteous heathren Atheists here have never heard or seen this book before. Quote "And they may take up serpents and drink poison or any deadly thing and it will not harm them." This is the test laid down by the Law Of God, while most of you are home resting easy in your lounge chair and the most work you've ever done for the Lord, is to reach over and search for the TV remote, we have people like the good Reverend Lonnie out there in the war zone of sin, Pastoring to the Police in disquise. There is a reward awaiting this man, on Earth? NO NO in Heaven, there is a mansion awaiting for this man in Heaven. This man is doing the Good Works set up by God, but he was set-up as with all good saved people, Satan, yes Satan, got in this man's way and he was set-up by this evil spirit called Satan. Satan knows every move of a God called christian, and got in the way. So now, Rev. Lonnie will have to minister to the evil varmen in the jails and help them find Jesus only in ways that Rev. Lonnie can do. This no doubt is truely God's Holy Will that Rev. Lonnie will be a spokesman for God in jail. God works in such mysterious ways. You may ask that is this some kind of joke? And you would be right, it's all a fucking joke mainly the Bible is the biggest joke and fraud to have ever been pulled on the entire world. Being an Atheist is like Bible repellant spray. After reading about this babbling God called fool, I am so proud and honored to claim to be a full fledged bona fide ATHEIST. This is just one jackass for God that got caught, but they all are frauds, all preachers, pastors, ministers, popes, etc. are total frauds, from day one. Not one is worthy to stake a claim as prescribed in the wholly full of shit Buybull.

I am new to this website. I was so grateful to stumble across it while searching for something else on the internet. I am also grateful that this sort of hypocrisy is exposed and out in the open, national coverage, etc.... I am the survivor of what sorry ass perverts, especially those working in the church, can do. People who lived with no true courage or moral decorum; men who raped an innocent child and re-shaped his future. I have permanent scars from growing up under the hand of the ALMIGHTY. This guy is just one of thousands of closeted freaks cruising our churches today, looking for their next conquest. All because they can't face themselves.

I have something to say about this; I am from Oklahoma where this happened. I now live in Pa. but I do know where he was in the city...the Habana Inn is in the center of the gay community. The inn itself has a gay club in it and a gay shoppe. So he knew exactly where he was and why he was there and it had nothing to do with pastoring to cops since they are rarely there except to harass the gay community. I think what pisses me off the most is that he thinks people from that area are stupid enough to believe his reasons for being down there.

There truly are some believers that really love the Lord. There reallly are some believers who really love people. There really are some believers who will admit they are wrong when they are. There really are some believers who would take a bullet for someone else. There really are some believers who want to see other people live up to their full potential. We all are so much more than we walk in! I would like to apologize for the hypocrisy you see in the church. I would like to apologize on behalf of all the jacked up situations that have occurred where christians are involved. It is not always easy serving God. You are definitely not like everyone else when you do. My prayer is that HE would find you and that you would respond. It is not about people and their flaws but about an awsome God that wants to touch and change your lives. HE changed mine! It was worth it! God bless you! WE ALL HAVE PROBLEMS, EVEN THOSE OF US WHO HAVE SAID YES TO JESUS! WEIRD HUH, EVERYONE ALWAYS THINKS THAT TO BE A CHRISTIAN YOU HAVE GOT TO SIGN UP FOR SOME CULT AND PRETEND YOU ARE BETTER THAN EVERYBODY ELSE, WHAT A JOKE HUH? My prayer is that the real ones, or at least the sincere ones would begin to come out of the closets. Jesus ate with all kinds of people that were in sin. He was not afraid of people.....

Dan says to this Anonymous, who is apologizing for all of the dumb shit that most people who call themselves Christians, do and say, because he is a real Christian and they aren't.

When you got lucky and had you happy experience with Jesus, you signed up for a cult, and you are pretending to be better than everybody else because of it.

All of those lying, cheating, stealing, fornicating preachers, out there are better than you in one sense. For the most part, they know they are being dishonest, and are fleecing the flock, and you don't. They are in touch with reality and you aren't.

Guess what organization is helping Lonnie Latham because they feel a person should not be arrested for committing sexual acts in private if they are consenting adults?
The ACLU, which I find ironic since most Christians consider the ACLU to be nothing but an organization that wants to steal our rights[actually the rights of the holy Christians who are being so mercilessly tortured in America] and is an organization of Satan.
