linkAn executive committee member of the Southern Baptist Convention was arrested on a lewdness charge for propositioning a plainclothes policeman outside a hotel, police said.
Lonnie Latham, senior pastor at South Tulsa Baptist Church, was booked into Oklahoma County Jail Tuesday night on a misdemeanor charge of offering to engage in an act of lewdness, police Capt. Jeffrey Becker said. Latham was released on $500 bail Wednesday afternoon.
Latham, who has spoken out against homosexuality, asked the officer to join him in his hotel room for oral sex. Latham was arrested and his 2005 Mercedes automobile was impounded, Becker said.
Calls to Latham at his church were not immediately returned Wednesday.
When he left jail, he said:
"I was set up. I was in the area pastoring to police."
The arrest took place in the parking lot of the Habana Inn, which is in an area where the public has complained about male prostitutes flagging down cars, Becker said. The plainclothes officers was investigating these complaints.
The lewdness charge carries a penalty of up to one year in jail and a $2,500 fine.
Latham is one of four Southern Baptist Convention executive committee members from Oklahoma.
He spoke out last year against a measure, ultimately approved by voters, to expand tribal gaming.
He has also spoken out against same-sex marriage and in support of a Southern Baptist Convention directive urging its 42,000 churches to befriend gays and lesbians and try to convince them that they can become heterosexual "if they accept Jesus Christ as their savior and reject their 'sinful, destructive lifestyle."'
The Southern Baptist Convention is the nation's largest Protestant denomination.
He [Lathham] has also spoken out against same-sex marriage and in support of a Southern Baptist Convention directive urging its 42,000 churches to befriend gays and lesbians and try to convince them that they can become heterosexual "if they accept Jesus Christ as their savior and reject their 'sinful, destructive lifestyle."'
[Is there are double standard here?]
"I was set up. I was in the area pastoring to police."
[Ahh so it was a set up. So what was it going to be right after he got his fix? Was he going preached Jesus to police office?]
One story of a pastor who is against such marriages getting caught in a compromising situation and the second two lesbians celebrating the fact that the Indian Tribal Council of Oklahoma upheld their marriage.
Tulsa world article states that Latham followed the officer for several blocks. When the officer pulled into a parking lot, Latham pulled up along side him and asked about oral sex. Hardly, sounds like a set up to me. Also, there are now published reports about Latham getting a ticket in this same general area in the recent past.
But they are worse than everyone else because they lie about who they are and preach one thing but practice another. They are hypocrites.
That is what makes priests and pastors so much worse than the average pedophile or male prostitute or prostitute customer...they hold everyone to a standard they themselves can't uphold and they have put themselves in a position that encourages people to trust them. They are two-faced snakes.
Janet is right: This is much worse than your average joe. Rev. Lonnie's actions have hurt much more people than if he would have been honest about his preferences to begin with. He has a wife and children that are very devestated about this. Hopefully, at least, they might become more compassionate to those around them. Plus, this man was one of them supporting the anti-gay marriage ban in Oklahoma this past election cycle. I wonder if you can make a homo a hetro according to Rev Lonnie, why had it not worked for him? Or was he just lying to himself.

I have something to say about this; I am from Oklahoma where this happened. I now live in Pa. but I do know where he was in the city...the Habana Inn is in the center of the gay community. The inn itself has a gay club in it and a gay shoppe. So he knew exactly where he was and why he was there and it had nothing to do with pastoring to cops since they are rarely there except to harass the gay community. I think what pisses me off the most is that he thinks people from that area are stupid enough to believe his reasons for being down there.
"There truly are some believers that really love the Lord. There really are some believers who really love people. There really are some believers who will admit they are wrong when they are. There really are some believers who would take a bullet for someone else. There really are some believers who want to see other people live up to their full potential. We all are so much more than we walk in! I would like to apologize for the hypocrisy you see in the church. I would like to apologize on behalf of all the jacked up situations that have occurred where Christians are involved. It is not always easy serving God. You are definitely not like everyone else when you do. My prayer is that HE would find you and that you would respond. It is not about people and their flaws but about an awesome God that wants to touch and change your lives. HE changed mine! It was worth it! God bless you! WE ALL HAVE PROBLEMS, EVEN THOSE OF US WHO HAVE SAID YES TO JESUS! WEIRD HUH, EVERYONE ALWAYS THINKS THAT TO BE A CHRISTIAN YOU HAVE GOT TO SIGN UP FOR SOME CULT AND PRETEND YOU ARE BETTER THAN EVERYBODY ELSE, WHAT A JOKE HUH? My prayer is that the real ones, or at least the sincere ones would begin to come out of the closets. Jesus ate with all kinds of people that were in sin. He was not afraid of people....."
Dan says to this Anonymous, who is apologizing for all of the dumb shit that most people who call themselves Christians, do and say, because he is a real Christian and they aren't.
When you got lucky and had you happy experience with Jesus, you signed up for a cult, and you are pretending to be better than everybody else because of it.
All of those lying, cheating, stealing, fornicating preachers, out there are better than you in one sense. For the most part, they know they are being dishonest, and are fleecing the flock, and you don't. They are in touch with reality and you aren't.

The ACLU, which I find ironic since most Christians consider the ACLU to be nothing but an organization that wants to steal our rights[actually the rights of the holy Christians who are being so mercilessly tortured in America] and is an organization of Satan.
