ORDWAY — A church pastor has been arrested on suspicion of attempted sexual assault on a child after he allegedly tried to arrange a meeting over the Internet with a detective posing as a 14-year-old girl.

Lucky Jerome Ashida, 44, pastor of River of Life Fellowship, was arrested Monday and released the next day on $50,000 bail, Pueblo County sheriff’s spokesman Steve Bryant said.

An arrest affidavit says Pueblo police Detective Daniel Anderson posed as a girl while communicating with Ashida in an online chat room.

The affidavit says that after a series of increasingly sexual chat room exchanges, Ashida and the person he thought was the young girl agreed to meet at a park on Aug. 30. Police said they secretly videotaped Ashida looking for the girl there.

The detective, again posing as a girl, then told Ashida through the chat room she had grown tired of waiting for him and returned to school, police said. They arranged a second meeting at the same park for Monday, and Ashida was arrested after he arrived, the affidavit says.

Ashida did not immediately return a telephone message left Wednesday at the church.

I grew up with Jerry and have recently learned of his arrest. I knew his family personally (his father, Lucky was one of my teachers) and although I have not been in contact with them for years, I had always known them to be very decent people. I am not here to pass judgement about how he runs his church or about the people who supported him in court. I am here to voice my concern about the outcome of the proceedings. For one, I am bothered to learn that his actions were premeditated and that he actively pursued meeting this girl. This was not a chance meeting under circumstances over which he had no control. I am bothered to learn of his offer of drugs to further pursuade the girl to meet him. I am bothered to realize that this probably was not the only child with whom he might have had internet contact and possibly physical contact but only the one instance where he was caught. Further aggravating is the knowledge of cases where innocent people are on the registered sex offenders list and have received much stiffer penalties for being in love (i.e. an 18 year old boy and a 15 year old girl, Ft. Lupton). Personally I dont have a closet empty of skeletons, but Jerry, I am saddened and ashamed to have known you and I am only thankful that you did not make a connection with my 14 year old girl nor any of her friends or your penalty might be very different than what you received.

I grew up with Jerry as well. And I agree that he comes from a very upstanding family. I too was taught by his father, Lucky, and have been very close with some of his family. Personally, I would not put "Lucky" Sr. and Jerry in the same moral catagory. When I was in school, Jerry was overly persuasive in trying to get all of us young girls to attend his Church in Crowley. His approach was down right CREEPY!! ! As if we were "BAD" girls in need of clensing. YUCKY LUCKY....!!!

Now that I am older, I find that fundementalism in my rural town has consumed many folks like a cancer. They operate from a fear based attitude and frankly cannot seem to open their minds enough to see past the end of their own noses.
It's a BIG world out there folks and there are many good people that might not share your exact same beliefs.

Whatever! - He is just LUCKY it was not my daughter he was trying to contact.....OH BOY!!! I am afraid there would be no trial for him.
